| ^ Puzzle Contest #65 with Lizzy Cseh LH _________________ 1 Hmigariaii-Americaii War Heroes JO NAPOT EVERYONE! Erzsi here with the November 2010 Puzzle Contest. Lost in the preparation and joy of the Thanksgiving celebration is one of our most important national holidays, Veterans Day. Previously known as Armistice Day, this day is set aside to honor all the men and women who have served honorably in the military, in wartime or peacetime. This puzzle recognizes 14 Hungarian-Americans that fought in the American Revolution or Civil War. In 1860, about 4,000 Hungarians lived the United States. More than 800 of those Magyar-Americans went on to fight for the Union between 1861 and 1865. Many of these soldiers became officers. Hungarian- American soldiers were the backbone of Uncoln’s Cavalry. There are many fascinating stories about these brave men. I suggest three sources for further enlightenment. On the internet, visit the websites of the Hungarian American Foundation and the Vas vary Collection (2005, Volume I, 33). Or, if possible, obtain an out of print book written by Edmund Vasvary entitled, “Uncoln’s Hungarian Heroes” (copyright 1939). Please, remember all of our veterans on Nov. 11. Attend a parade on Veterans Day, visit a veteran at a nursing home, or, if you see a veteran on the street say, “Thank You!” Puzzle Contest #62 WINNERS The winners of our Puzzle Contest #62 were drawn Oct. 7, 2010, at the Home Office.
