Branch 226 McKeesport, PA by Seth Sparico Every morning right after rising from bed, I turn the light on to my fish tank. Soon, all the fish are swimming to the top, aware they are about to be fed. I take a few flakes and toss them in and soon the fish are full and happy. How nice it would be if it were that easy to feed all the hungry people in the world. I know it is not. Therefore, in my own way, I am trying to help alleviate the hunger in any way I can. When I was 13,1 had the opportunity to go to New York City. The trip was not for pleasure, but to work at Hope for the Future Ministries. During the weeklong stay, I helped feed a very small percentage of New York City's homeless population. I did this with a group, working in a warehouse sorting food or on the street comer passing out food. Soon, I realized there were many people who were not as lucky as I. When Malvene Heyz, president of William Penn Association Branch 226 McKeesport, Pa., said she and the branch were looking to organize a food drive, I knew the junior disciples youth group of the Free Hungarian Reformed Church of McKeesport would jump at the chance to help. As a church group, we are blessed to have the support of the congregation, as well as that of Rev. Daniel Borsay. We also collected from the church bingo players, enticing them with a free bingo package and a coupon for dining in the kitchen. We would have liked to have collected more; however, we are aware that every little bit helps. As the food we collected finds its way to the food bank and those in need, I am fortunate to be heading back to New York City to work again at Hope for the Future Ministries. Branch 249 Dayton, OH ^ by Michele Daley-LaFlame Those lazy crazy days of summer are almost gone. Oh, rats! There was so much I wanted to do. I think I got the most important things done. First, attending the golf tournament in Harrisburg, Pa., which was great fun. Didn't come home with any prizes, only great memories of visiting with my WPA family and scoping out the shopping for our next visit. Be sure to notice our picture of some of our workers from Join Hands Day. They are students from Our Lady of The Rosary School. We want to thank them again for their participation on May 4. We all worked hard and had great fun. It was a pleasure working with the young people. We would like to congratulate J.P. LaFlame on his marriage to Gabriella Monardes on Feb. 29,2008. The LaFlames celebrated with family and many WPA friends in Dayton on June 22. It was a great party and a good time was had by all. We would also like to congratulate Mary Mobley on her 92nd birthday on Aug. 4.1 had the privilege of visiting with Mary and taking her some candy and flowers. She was grateful for the company and told me all about her family bringing her cake, ice cream and gifts. She was very proud and happy to be 92 years old. Mary, may God Bless you with many more years to come. And happy birthday to Branch President Anne Kertesz whose birthday was on July 20. Many happy returns and God bless you. The bowling season will start in late September. We really have so much fun bowling, we would like to have you join us. Please call Anne Marie Schmidt at 937-667-1211 for schedules and additional info. 16 William Penn Life, September 2008
