Branch 249 Dayton, OH by Anne Marie Schmidt Summer is now behind us and as we head into fall our calendar is being filled with many activities which bond us to the wonderful Hungarian culture. Although we live very full and busy lives, it is so important to take time to get involved in some of these activities so that our heritage will live on for our children. We have started our bowling league on Sunday afternoons. We meet at 3:00 p.m. at Pla-Mor Lanes, 4901 Linden Ave., Dayton. It is not too late to join the league. We bowl for 12 weeks from September through March. The cost is $9.25 per week. A pizza party at Marion's Pizza will be held at the end of the season. For more information, please call me at (937) 667-1211. Our fall cabbage roll sale was held Sept. 28. We thank all those who placed orders. Local Hungarian organizations and churches are planning a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. The event will be held Oct. 22 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Kossuth Hall, 4475 Old Troy Pike, Dayton. A very memorable program has been planned which will include a documentary film about the revolution, commemorative speakers, dance performances by the Dayton Hungarian Festival Club Dancers and visits from local politicians. The program will also feature local residents who participated in the revolution who will share their stories. Pastries and light refreshments will be served. Branch 296 Springdale, PA by Diane M. Torma Happy October birthdays to Branch President Ron Balia, Matthew Charles, Dorothy Dinzeo, Boris Gosciejew, John E. Lovász and all of our branch members. Wishing you a joyful day. Happy anniversary wishes to John and Gertie Simon, who will celebrate 63 years of marriage on Oct. 24. John and Gertie were married in Leechburg on Oct. 24,1943, in the Hungarian Reformed Church by the Rev. Steven Szőke. They drove to Denver, Colorado for a short honeymoon, but had to return to the U.S. Air Force. John was ordered overseas in February 1944 and spent his war time in England, France and Germany, returning home in November 1945. John's father was a Hungarian Rákóczi Aid Society organizer and president for many years. John and Gertie are blessed with three sons—John III, Leslie and Dennis-and seven grandchildren, all life members of Branch 296. Now residing in Georgia, they miss Leechburg, but hold on to many fond memories. They try to return to Pennsylvania each year for the WPA Annual Picnic-A Great Fraternal Fest at Penn Scenic View. Congratulations, John and Gertie, on your 63 years. What a tribute to your love and commitment—an impressive achievement! Our get well thoughts are with Frank Fritz, who was recently hospitalized with a serious illness. Frank is the son of Noreen Fritz, on of our fulltime sales representatives and an active member of Branch 296. Please keep Frank in your prayers. Don't forget—the annual bacon roast will be held Saturday, Oct. 7, at 2:00 p.m. at the Hungarian Reformed Church in Springdale. We look forward to seeing you for a day of fraternal fellowship.
