Branch 159 Phoenixvüle, PA by Caroline B. Varner A two-day snow and slippery roads were ignored by happy William Penn members and guests who gathered at the Phoenixvüle Burger King on Dec. 7 for our annual family Christmas party. They were greeted by Caroline and Steve Varner, and each family received their bag of "favorite things" provided by the WPA Home Office. At that time, the children's favorite thing was the mini lit trumpets. They did not know about the "screamie" bouncy balls until they had their coats on and were ready to leave the restaurant. That really brought squeals of delight, with balls bouncing everywhere high over our heads. After lunch, Santa made his appearance and greeted the children and adults. He listened to the Christmas wishes of the children and sat for a photo session with them, after which he gave each child a gift and candy. He also awarded each mother with a door prize. Temple Coldren has been our Santa for the past several years and has always done a fantastic job. Thank you so much, Santa. We all love you. You've made a big difference at our parties. A big "thank you" also goes to all who helped make the party a success, especially the Home Office and Board of Directors for their generous financial help that makes this affair possible. Last, but not least, we ask you to please support the WPA scholarship foundation. It is such a worthwhile cause. For your life insurance needs, please contact Caroline Varner at 610- 933-8391. A very happy, healthy and blessed new year to all! Branch 226 McKeesport, PA by Goldie J. Szarka Boldog Új Évet! (Happy New Year!) Unbelievable. Another year has Santa Claus listens to the Christmas wishes of young guests attending the Branch 226 Christmas party. Branch News gone by, and here we are in the brand new year of 2004. We wish all our members and their families a very happy, healthy and prosperous new year. Our annual Christmas party was held Dec. 7 at the White Oak American Legion. The hall was decorated very festively with three Christmas trees. A talented magician, Chuck Caputo, entertained the children with his tricky maneuvers. As tradition dictates, Santa Claus made his annual appearance. He listened to the requests of the boys and girls and gave each of them a bag of goodies and money. Sincere thanks go out to Bette Hoffman for organizing such a beautiful Christmas party. Joe Szarka and the Szirmáé children led the guests in the singing of Christmas carols. After Santa's visit, we sat down to a delicious meal consisting of breaded chicken, rigatoni, parsley potatoes, vegetables, rolls, a ham and cheese tray, a relish tray, fruit salad and a chocolate and yellow holiday cake. Prior to the festivities, the election of branch officers for 2004 was held. Elected were: Joseph Szarka, president; Goldie Szarka, vice president/ treasurer; Malvene Heyz, secretary; and Rose Gerzsenyi, auditor. Each year our branch presents a monetary donation to two organizations. This year, one gift was given to the Intersection in McKeesport; the other was given to the Elizabeth (Pa.) Central Blood Bank. Birthday greetings go out to Violet Lenart who will celebrate her birthday Jan. 29. May God bless you with good health. We wish you the best that life can bring. Birthday greetings and anniversary wishes are also being sent out to all of you January celebrants. The program began with a magical performance by Doc Dougherty. The children were awed by the magic and eager to volunteer as assistants. Their hearty laughter was 18 Williu Pen Life, January 2004
