WHEREAS, tliis Council is sincerely pleased to recognize the William Penn Association on the noteworthy occasion ofits 61 st Annual BowlingToumament & Scholarsliip Days which is being held May 28 - 30,2004 in Independence, Oliio; and WHEREAS, die William Penn Association is a Fraternal Benefit Society and is headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The association was f ounded on February 21,1886 in Hazelton, Pennsylvania by thirteen coal miners and was cliartered by die Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in December 1886 under die name of“Verhovay Aid Association.” The goal of die founders was to extend a helping hand to each odier and to die many Hungarian immigrants who worked and suffered in die coal mines and industrial centers of America during a period of this country’s liistory when insurance of any sort did not exist; and WHEREAS, after decades of growth, in 1926, die Home Office moved to Pittsburgh. By dus time, die “VeriiovavAd Association” had grown to die largest, wealdiiest and most successful of all die Hungarian-American Fraternal ( )rganizations. Also significant is die “VeihovayY’ merger in 19,5.5 with die Rákóczi Ad Association, forming die William Penn Fraternal Asociation, further strengdiening and ensuring die preservation of die Hungarian culture in .America; and WHEREAS, in 1972, die name of die joint organization was changed to die William Penn Association and today it is die major Hungarian Fraternal Society in America whose goals are to provide benefits to its members and dieir beneficiaries, and to aid in die preservation of Hungarian culture and Hungarian ideals in American; and WHEREAS, upon enrolling in a William Penn Association life insurance plan, members become eligible for added benefits dial make a difference in dieir lives, including Social and Recreational Activities; College Scholarsliip Program; Penn Scenic View', which is a beautiful 150-acre facility in Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands; and Benefits for Orphans, Newborn Children and Graduating High School Seniors; now, dierefore, BE IT RESOLVED, diat Cleveland City Council is especially pleased to recognize die 61 st Amual William Penn Association Bowling Toumament & Scholarsliip Days, and extends best wishes to die members and friends of the William Penn Asociation for a very' enjoyable weekend, along vvidi best wishes for much continued success in die future.
