Branch 76 liladelphia, PA by Jack Tokár A great big "hello" to all the members of the WPA, with special greetings for all the members of Branch 76. On March 7, the Philadelphia Hungarian Club hosted a celebration of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. In addition to the usual excellent dinner, there was special entertainment in remembrance of this historic event. The entertainment was arranged and directed by Tibor Pavlanszky and Zoltán Szabó. Guests were welcomed to the club by its president, Magdalena Juhasz. The entertainment included poems, songs and other presentations by Attila Vertes, Dr. Sándor Mészáros, Stefánia Szabó, Ilona Nagy, Olga Novakovszki, Katalin Kosztan, Annamária Hanuth and Tibor Pavlanszky. Jack Tokar's recitation of the national song "Talpra Magyar" was received with great enthusiasm. The honor guard-Janos Kiss, Sándor Kocsis and Sándor Bujdoso-were dressed as hussars. Brigitta Bujdosó and Stefánia Szabó, dressed in traditional costumes, presented flowers. Philadelphia is home to the famous Independence Square. But, Budapest also has an Independence Square. The Philadelphia Hungarian Club, located on Southampton Road in Northeast Philadelphia, could be a gathering place for all Hungariansan "Independence Square" for Hungarians in the Philadelphia area. The problem is that the current membership of the club is too small to maintain the property and keep up with the taxes and expenses. There is a vital need for all Hungarians and those of Hungarian descent to support the Club. It would be appreciated if people, especially those with particular talents and/or special educational backgrounds, could arrange for special events, particularly fund raising events, for the benefit of all Hungarians and for the club. We want to offer a special welcome to our newest member, Rosemary Boemer. Also, special thanks go to Margaret Garcia for recommending the WPA to Karen Davis and her family. In addition, we want to offer our sincere condolences to Mrs. Rozman on the recent loss of her husband. Bette Tokár recently celebrated her birthday (39 again!). Our very best wishes to her and all other members who have celebrated recent birthdays. We owe special thanks to the underwriters and employees of the WPA who are always so helpful to us and to our members. Branch 89 Homestead, PA by Ruth D. Toth On March 13, Branch 89 hosted an egg decorating demonstration presented by Baba Ujvági and her assistant, Edit Szep, of the Bethlen Home Cultural Center at the First Hungarian Reformed Church of Homestead. There was a large group in attendance even though the weather was very cold outside and the threat of snow was looming. Baba brought an array of beautiful eggs, each featuring intricate Hungarian folk art designs. Along with the eggs, she brought other items which reflected the variations found in Hungarian folk art. She also demonstrated six techniques of coloring eggs and discussed the folk art and religious customs of the different regions of Hungary. Several people expressed interest in having a class during the warmer months to demonstrate how to create panoramic eggs-the type of eggs we loved as children, the ones you look through and see a picture. A continental breakfast was served prior to the demonstration. Everyone thanked Baba and Edit for their presentation and gave them a standing ovation. It was indeed a wonderful way to spend a Saturday morning. Baba is the wife of the Rev. Imre Bertalan, executive director of the Bethlen Home. March, indeed, was a busy month for our branch. On March 7, a group of 25 members went to see "The Passion of the Christ" and enjoyed a lively discussion afterwards over lunch with the Rev. Alexander Jalso. Our branch will be hosting a 5- day/4-night trip to Las Vegas. We have two dates in mind, with the final date to be based on majority response. The possible dates are Aug. 15 to 19 and Aug. 18 to 22. Prices are slightly higher for the second set of dates as it includes accommodations on Friday and Saturday nights. The prices for the various hotels— with the first price shown being for Aug. 15 to 19, and the second price being for Aug. 18 to 22~would be as follows:- MGM Grand Emerald Tower, $544.20 or $577.20;- Monte Carlo Hotel & Casino, $539.20 or $600.20;- Treasure Island, $564.20 or $590.20;- Bellagio, $770.20 or $859.20; and- The Venetian, $752.20 or $800.20. All prices are per person, based on double occupancy, and include round trip airfare from Pittsburgh to Las Vegas, hotel accommodations and transfers to and from the airport. Trip cancellation insurance is available for an additional charge of $69. In order to guarantee these rates, a $100 deposit is due immediately as airfares keep rising. This trip is open to all WPA members. Please note, however, that the prices may differ for those not departing from Pittsburgh. Anyone interested in going to Las Vegas with us should call Lisa Toth at 412-461-5812 as soon as possible. We hope you will join us this August. This trip promises to be a truly wonderful and memorable experience for all. 16 Willi» Pen Life, May 2004
