Branch News Branch 189 Ailiance, OH by Sherri Cole We hope everyone had a great Easter. On April 4, our ladies auxiliary sponsored an Easter egg hunt. Although it snowed the day of the event, quick action was taken to change the location of the hunt from the park to the upstairs banquet hall at our club. Our thanks to Paul Roudabush for braving the elements to redirect the parents and children. Thirty children participated in three age groups. Everyone came away with eggs filled with candy, toys and prizes, as well as treat bags filled by the ladies auxiliary. All extra Easter goodies were donated to the Alliance for Children and Families. Our members recently helped to raise $7,000 for the domestic violence shelter and another $7,000 for the Alliance for Chidren and Families. Our bowling machine league has just ended. Everyone had a great time and all were winners. We finished up the season with a wonderful banquet prepared by Lloyd. Our special thanks to Bob Schaffer whose help and humor made it possible. Torma Due to the untimely death of Branch President Ralph Schuller, our branch held a special election at the March meeting where Ronald Balia was elected President. Congratulations, Ron. Happy May birthday wishes to Jim Charles, Frank Fritz and all of our members celebrating birthdays this month. We hope you enjoy your special day and hope you have many more to come. Two very special people are celebrating milestone birthdays. Happy 75th birthday to Vice President John Rusak and Happy 80th birthday to George Charles, our dedicated branch coordinator. Branch 296 welcomes new members Paul Ernst, Carl Friedrich, Ronda Grotefend, Emma Henry and Rosalie Zimmerman. We're so glad to have you all. Thank you for choosing WPA for your life insurance and annuity needs. We hope you enjoy the many fraternal benefits that come with membership in the WPA. Get well wishes to Martha Schuller, who has been hospitalized recently. We miss you. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you. Best wishes also to Gene Miller as he recuperates at home following heart surgery. We'd like to convey our best wishes to the Felack family as they go through a difficult time. Valley High School sophomore Erika Felack, 16, daughter of Erick and Kelly Felack, sustained a head injury during softball practice after being struck in the head by a line drive. Hospitalized in critical condition at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, Erika was in a drug-induced coma and faced possible brain surgery. She is now undergoing rehabilitation. Our thoughts and prayers are with Erika and her family. Thanks again, Nick Koricich, for your scholarship donation. You are very thoughtful and generous. Our next branch meeting will be held on Thursday, May 13, át 7:00 p.m. at King's Family Restaurant, 2400 Leechburg Road, New Kensington, PA. We will be celebrating George Charles' 80th birthday at this meeting. We welcome and encourage all branch members to attend as we plan our schedule of activities for the year. We would love to have your input. Please note the changes in time and location of this month's meeting. For your life insurance and annuity needs, call Noreen Fritz at 412- 821-1837. Branch 525 _J u» Angele«, CA |_ by Carol Orendy We members in California don't read much in the William Penn Life about people or events in California. I think readers would be interested to know about the following items. Yolanda Nagy Fintor, a member of Branch 525, wrote "Hungarian Cookbook...Old World Recipes for New World Cooks" a few years ago. It was so successful that the publisher, Hippocrene Books, asked her to write a larger edition. The new publication came out in August 2003 and carries the same name with an added "Expanded Edition" designation on the cover. It's available at major book stores and retails for $24.95. Some things to note: Many second and third generation Hungarians don't know much about our Hungarian traditions and mores. Ms. Fintor goes into nice detail about almost-lost traditions such as Sprinkling Day. She covers traditional holiday meals and does a lovely narrative on how Pork Stew with Sauerkraut (Szekely Gulyas) came into being. Perhaps best of all, she offers substitutes for grocery items not readily available or which offer a quicker-and-almost-as-good way to prepare Old World meals. This would make an especially good gift book for friends and younger generations. On the subject of cooking. I just Williu Pen Life, May 2004 17
