Children who attended Branch 8286’s annual family Christmas party display the WPA gift bags they received at the party. Branch 800 Altoona, PA By Vincent Frank Happy Valentine's Day on Wednesday, Feb. 14 to all members of the WPA. It's a day that we all cherish in that we can remember our loved ones in some special way. Prominent ways are sending a Valentine card, candy or flowers. Or, you may have some other special way to appreciate your loved ones. It is recorded that St. Valentine was a priest and martyr who died in Rome at the end of the 3rd century. The WPA will celebrate it's 115th anniversary on Founders Day, Feb. 21. Branch 800 sends congratulations to all members of our fraternal association and all staff members at the Home Office. It all began in the year 1886. It's that time of year that the Lenten season will soon begin. Ash Wednesday will be on Feb. 28. Since we are now in the new millennium, it's a good time to pause for a few moments to collect our thoughts. Let's see what we can do to further our spiritual outlook so that we can appreciate and enjoy an even more beautiful Easter. Keep in your prayers Myron Yeager who had a knee replacement. It's hoped with surgery and rehabilitation that he will be able to walk without pain in the near future. He faithfully attends our branch meetings, and we anxiously wait for his return. For you branch members who have moved out of state, we send you our weather news from back home. Here in central Pennsylvania, we have had nice winters the past few years. But this year, old man winter has given us a very cold season so far. For all your life insurance and annuity needs, please call Bob Jones in Altoona at (814) 942-2661. The 12 adults and 10 children attending had a wonderful time and enjoyed the Christmas music, songs, crafts and the many cookies and cakes made by our members. Each child received a present from under the tree as well as a WPA bag filled with goodies from the Home Office, which they all proudly displayed for us (see photo above). John Szanto, our branch president, said all had a very good time. Many of the children said they will tell their friends and bring them to next year's celebration. William Penn life, February 2001 19
