RICHARD J. PHILLIPS PITTSBURGH - The Associa­tion was saddened by the recent death of Richard J. Phillips, former national director and investment manager. Mr. Phillips, 87, passed away on Dec. 28,2000. He was bom in Detroit, Mich., on June 10,1913. His service to the Associa­tion began in 1933 when he was branch secretary, and later branch manager, of Branch 443 of the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Associa­tion in Detroit. In 1943, at the Verhovay's National Conven­tion in Pittsburgh, he was elected to its Board of Directors. He served as a national director and secre­tary to the Board for three consecutive four-year terms. After the merger of the Verhovay and the Rákóczi Aid Association in 1955, Mr. Phillips was elected to the position of investment manager of the newly formed William Penn Fraternal Association. He moved to Pittsburgh with his wife, Margaret, who died in 1994. During his 13 years as investment manager, Mr. Phillips put together a well­­balanced securities portfolio. He also developed the real estate package on which now stands Oxford Center in downtown Pittsburgh. He is survived by a sister, Hazel Avani, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services and burial were in Detroit. May he rest in peace. CLARENCE C.EVEGES PITTSBURGH - The Home Office staff and members of Branch 352 Coraopolis, Pa., were saddened by the recent death of former Home Office employee Clarence C. Eveges. Mr. Eveges, 74, passed away Jan. 24,2001, after a sudden illness. He was bom June 13, 1926, in the village of Puritan, Pa., the ninth of 13 children. At age 17, he moved to Pitts­burgh where he worked at the E. L. Wiegand Co. for 42 years. When the factory closed, he came to work at the WPA's Home Office, bringing with him a warm smile and gentle dispostion. He retired in 1994. He was a devout member of St. Bartholomew Parish as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #4242 and American Legion Post #351. He also devoted himself to the Penn Hills Senior Softball and Volleyball leagues. He is survived by his wife, Marianne (Furedy) of Penn Hills, Pa.; two daughters, Juliann of McCandless, Pa., and Suzanne Krzeminski and her husband Thomas of East Aurora, N.Y.; two sons, Michael and his wife Mary Eleanor of Mt. Lebanon, Pa., and Joseph of Indiana, Pa.; two granddaughters, Emily and Kathryn Eveges; three sisters, Anne, Pearl and Veronica; three brothers, Frank, Donald and James; and many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Jan. 27 at St. Bartholomew Church, with interment in Queen of Heav­en Cemetery, McMurray, Pa. May he rest in peace.
