WPA, Hungarian community make Partium choir feel right at home by Endre Csornán LIGONIER, PA - The Partium Hungarian Christian University Choir from Transylvania made their fifth stop on an 18-day tour around North America at the beautiful grounds of the Bethlen Home. As their bus rolled in the excitement mounted. As the students poured from the bus, they looked tired and hungry. The sight of refreshments and a hot meal were a welcome sight. The WPA sponsored the delicious luncheon. The choir was warmly greeted by Anthony C. Beke, WPA chairman of the Board, Elmer W. Toth, WPA vice chairman of the Board, and the Rev. Imre Bertalan, executive director of the Bethlen Home. After enjoying a wonderful meal prepared by the Home's staff, the choir was able to relax before that evening's concert. The choir performed this benefit concert at the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Ligonier. The performance was breathtaking, and the audience was overwhelmed. Several hundred people from the Hungarian churches and WPA branches in the tri-state area came to support this event. After the concert a magnificent reception was held. The display of food staggered the imagination. Ilona Posta, Baba Bertalan and others did a great job preparing and serving the elegant buffet. The students entertained the large crowd with a beautiful performance of music, song and dance until nearly midnight. The spontaneous performance brought the guests to their feet as the room came alive with music and dance. It was an unforgettable evening, thanks largely to the excellent planning of Rev. Bertalan. As the evening came to an end, the bus rolled out to take the choir to Penn Scenic View where they were the guests of the WPA for the night. The next day WPA volunteers prepared a tremendous Hungarian meal of kolbász and hurka. Our thanks go to the following WPA volunteers for all their efforts in support of this event: Mr. and Mrs. Elmer W. Toth, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew W. McNelis, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Szarka, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Király, Maria Bistey, András Spagina, Eva Pap and Arlene Csornán. We will cherish forever the memory of this remarkable event.
