AnnualBowling Holy Toledo Bowlers share in the fraternal fun of tournament weekend TOLEDO, OH — It's a good thing bowling's an indoor sport. For the second straight year, the weather outside greeting bowlers for Saturday morning's team event at the WPA Annual Bowling Tournament was frightful. But, inside Imperial Lanes, the atmosphere was delightful. The warm, fraternal spirit at the lanes was generated by 174 members and friends who participated in this year's tournament. That total included a record 34 children who enjoyed the annual Juvenile Fun Event. The weekend opened with the annual meeting of the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation. During the meeting, $11,020 was raised for the Foundation. The weekend's other activities raised another $5,155 (see story below). After the meeting all bowlers and guests gathered for the annual bowlers reception at the Clarion Hotel Westgate. Everyone enjoyed plenty of good food and refreshing beverages while getting reacquainted with old friends. A fun addition to the reception this year was a Chinese auction featuring dozens of prize packages. The Chinese auction raised $1,700 for the Scholarship Foundation. The bowling commenced Saturday morning at Imperial Lanes, featuring the team event and Juvenile Fun Event. Our thanks go to Branch 27 Vice President Paula Bodnar and branch member Andy Feyes for rolling the official first balls and getting the tournament off to a great start. No one claimed the weekend's big cash prize, $10,000 for bowling a perfect game during Saturday's team event. But, Tournament Administrator Robert A. Ivancso did bowl a 300 game during Sunday's play. It was the first perfect game in the 58-year history of the WPA tournament and Ivancso's second perfect game this year. Two lucky bowlers won some extra cash for scoring a strike at the right HIGHS & LOWS: Tournament Administrator Robert A. Ivancso (left) took high-game honors for the weekend rolling a 300 game on Sunday. Meanwhile, National Auditor William S. Vasvary (right) holds his “special” prize for rolling the lowest score during the men’s team event time during Saturday's play. Andy Feyes and National Director Barbara A. House each won $300 in the Lucky Strike Contest. For a complete list of Weekend’s activities raise $16,175 for scholarship hind THE BIGGEST WINNER DURING our bowling weekend was the WPA's Scholarship Foundation. Thanks to the generosity of our members and friends~and the success of a new event--a total of $16,175 was raised for the benefit of the Foundation. That made it one of our most successful fund-raising weekends ever. The bulk of the funds ($11,020) was raised during the annual meeting of the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation held May 25 at the Clarion Hotel Westgate. The list of donors was led by Branch 18 Lincoln Park, Mich., which donated $2,500 in memory of its deceased members, and Branch 14 Cleveland with a $1,000 donation. The benefit raffle drawn during Saturday's bowling awards dinner raised $1,730. Another $1,725 was collected through the lane sponsorship program. The weekend's new event was the Chinese auction held during Friday's bowlers reception. The auction featured dozens of prizes, offering something to suit every age and taste. Our members and friends responded to this new event by purchasing $1,700 worth of tickets. Our thanks to one and all for their generosity and support. In other Foundation business, 10 members were elected during the annual meeting to serve on the Foundation's Board of Directors. They were: Steve Charles, Tom House, Stephen J. Ivancso Jr., Mary Kaszonyi, Steve LaFlame, Margaret Leonardo, Joan Mauerman, Frank J. Radvany, Mark Schmidt and Carol Truesdell. THANK YOU! 6 llilliam fen Lile. June 2001
