Branch News Branch 14 Cleveland, OH By Dawn D. Ward Branch 14 Reporter The annual Branch 14 Christmas party will be held Sunday, Dec. 13, at 3:00 p.m. at the Ridge Manor Party Center in Brooklyn, Ohio. By now all juvenile members of Branch 14 have received invita­tions, but all Branch 14 adult mem­bers are welcome to attend. Please call Branch President Karen Congeni at (440) 846-9248 if you’re an adult branch member and are interested in attending. The only form of admission will be a dona­tion to the WPA scholarship fund. A buffet dinner and entertainment by “Sparkles” the clown will be enjoyed by all. All Branch 14 members are wel­come to attend our monthly meet­ings held the second Wednesday of each month (excluding summer months) at the Grand Bay Club­house, 7001 W. Cross Creek Trail, Brecksville. The next meeting will be Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m. Branch 16 Perth Amboy, NJ Congratulations to Branch 16 mem­ber Meagan Mirkovich, a senior at Bryant College in Smithfield, R.I., who was one of five finalists for the college’s 1998 Homecoming Spirit Award. Meagan and the other final­ists were honored during halftime ceremonies of the first home foot­ball game in the school’s 135-year history. She is an applied actuarial math­ematics major with a 3.8 grade­­point average. She is an active member of the Student Program­ming Board, the Bryant Players and the Actuarial Association. She is also a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society. Meagan is the daughter of Na­tional Director George F. Mirkovich and the granddaughter of WPA Chairman of the Board Michael J. Hrabar. Branch 18 Lincoln Park, MI By Barbara A. House National Director We at Branch 18 would like to wish you and all your loved ones a very blessed and happy holiday season. May the new year bring you all you desire. A special thank you to the Home Office for sending us the funds for our Holiday Baskets and for our family Christmas party. Get well quick to Gus Acosta and Emma Poliska. At our November meeting, we choose to make donations to the Downriver Hospice and the Penrickton Center for the Blind. We are also, again, very proud support­ers of the White Rose Ball, which is sponsored by the Hungarian Arts Club. The ball will be held Feb. 6, 1999, at the elegant Dearborn Inn. Scholarships will be awarded to deserving art students. Plan to at­tend this worthwhile event. Our next membership meeting will be Dec. 11, followed by our family Christmas party on Dec. 12. If you did not receive an invitation but would like to attend, please call me at (313) 383-4472. Our next two meetings will be Jan. 8 and Feb. 5. Please try to attend. You would be made to feel very welcome. New Year’s Eve parties are scheduled at the Hungarian Ameri­can Cultural Center and at Holy Cross Hungarian R. C. Church. Call me for any information. The Cul­tural Center also has an authentic Hungarian pork supper planned for Jan. 23. Again, I ask you to please support these Hungarian events. Without you they will cease to be. Please remember in your prayers all our many members who have passed away this year. May they rest in peace. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Kathy Novak Branch 28 Reporter It’s hard to believe we’re hearing the jingle of those little bells again. We hope that everyone’s calen­dars are marked for Saturday, Dec. 12, to be at 2219 Donald Ave. at 2:00 p.m. for our annual children’s Christmas party. The invitations have all the details. Santa’s plan­ning on seeing everyone’s smiling faces as the committee has a very nice and entertaining day planned, as well as a delicious buffet. Adults are invited, too, as the December meeting and election of officers for 1999 will be held following the party. The annual Thanksgiving vesper services were held Nov. 24 at the American Hungarian Reformed Church. Branch 28 was well-rep­resented by a number of members. The branch hosted another suc­cessful bingo/card party recently. Those participating enjoyed the social gathering and the holiday theme prizes. While everyone is so busy pre­paring for the holidays, let’s not forget to wish all those celebrating birthdays or anniversaries a won­derful day. Congratulations to Irene Nemeth on her recent retirement. Unfortu­nately, we also have to send her get well wishes as she recently broke her ankle. Also, special get well wishes to Irene Tomory and every­one else under the weather. Our sincere thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost a loved one recently. Sincerely wishing everyone a joyous and blessed Christmas sea­son. May we all experience the love and peace of this holy season. Branch 129 Columbus, OH By Arpad Sibrik Branch 129 Coordinator This report is being dictated from a bed in Mount Carmel Hospital, for you see I have been confined to bed with some heart problems. Tomor­row, I am being transfered to Mount Carmel Medical Center for either a heart catherization, angioplasty or, worse, emergency open heart sur­gery. Pray for me, but I hope to be back in good shape soon. (Editor 's note: Mr. Sibrik underwent qua­druple-bypass surgery Nov. 17 and at press time was recuperating at home.) Thanksgiving has come and gone, and soon Christmas will be here. Our family Christmas party will be held on Dec. 12 at the Northway Memorial VFW Post 495, located at 425 S. Princeton Ave., Columbus. There will be plenty of good Hungarian food and refreshments. Admission is $5 for adult members and $10 for adult non-members. Each adult will re­ceive three tickets for beer or liquor. Soda pop will be free. The next branch meeting will be held Dec. 9 at the Lockboume Av­enue VFW Post. At this meeting we will conduct our election of offic­ers. We’re hoping for a big turn­out. Two of our member families— Alex and Betty Erdei and John and Dolores Horvath—recently moved to Florida. Good luck to both couples on their new homes and lives. Eleanor Bordy, a longtime mem­ber, passed away. Our condolences go to her family and friends. May she rest in peace. Merry Christmas to all! Goydan Branch 226 Coordinator At our November branch meeting, we finalized plans for our Christ­mas party to be held Dec. 13 at 2:30 p.m. at the White Oak American Legion. Entertainment will include Bo Bo the Clown and Hermine the Elf, with children participating in the magic act. Santa Claus will visit to pass out treats, including a very special Beanie Baby to children ages 12 and under in attendance. There will also be a very special buffet lunch and refreshments. We urge families to return their reservations cards to us by Dec. 1, so we may order enough gifts and refreshments for everyone. On Saturday, Dec. 12, at 1:00 p.m. Branch 296 will host its an­nual Christmas party at the Hungar­ian Reformed Church, 130 Walters Lane, Springdale. As usual we will have great entertainment, lunch, a visit from Santa Claus, treats for the children and fraternal fellowship. The election of branch officers will be held at our next branch meeting on Dec. 9 at 7:00 p.m. We encourage all members to attend this meeting. Branch 590 Cape Coral, FL By Joan Mauerman Branch 590 Reporter________________ Our Branch 590 meeting was held Nov. 7 in Egret Hall, Cape Coral. The table decorations were done in a Thanksgiving theme. Door prize winners were Sara Lesko and Helen Toth. Mike Tomcsak was the winner of the half-and-half raffle. Our thanks to bakers Sara Lesko, Helen Toth and Julia McGrath. Get well wishes to Elizabeth Posey and Vi Timmer Shinski. Belated happy 50th wedding anniversary to John and Mary Veres of Cooper City, Fla, origi­nally of Cleveland. They celebrated their big day in October. A wall hanging of the Lord’s Prayer crocheted in Hungarian was donated to the Hungarian Cultural Center in New Brunswick, N. J., by the family of the late Steve Bartus of Cape Coral. His wife Betty has moved back to Hawthorne Woods, 111. The picture was presented by their son Bill Bartus of Cape Coral, our branch vice president.
