October 1997, William Penn Life, Page 7 In Memóriám EUGENE ROY EVANS CORAPEAKE, NC -- The entire Home Office staff was saddened by the recent death of Eugene Roy Evans, father of Home Office employee Steven R. Evans and fatherin-law of Home Office employee Debra S. Evans. Mr. Evans, 68, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 1997, in his home in Corapeake, N.C. He died on the day he and his wife, Doris J. Evans, were to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. He was currently employed at the Virginia Department of Transportation as a security officer. He was the former chief of police in Smithfield, Va., and Youngwood, Pa. A U.S. Army veteran, he served in the military police. He long dreamed of working for the U.S. Department of Justice. Just days before his death, he was offered a job with the department in its state of Virginia office. In addition to his wife and son Steven, he is survived by two other sons, Eugene Floyd Evans and William Gerald Evans, both of Pennsylvania; a sister, Doris Ruddon of Pennsylvania; two brothers, Wendell Evans of North Carolina and Gary Evans of Virginia; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Funeral services were held Sept. 21 at the Sturtevant Funeral Home in Portsmouth, Va. May he rest in peace. MARGARET YOLANDA FABIAN SCHMIDT PHILADELPHIA -- The members of Branch 76 and the Philadelphia Hungarian community were saddened by the recent death of Margaret Yolanda Fabian Schmidt. Mrs. Schmidt died Sept. 2, 1997, following years of illness. Margit, as she was known by friends and fellow Hungarians, was born in Budapest in 1901, the daughter of the late Gyula and Verona Fabian. While an infant, she emigrated to the U.S. with her parents. Her father, a skilled cabinet maker by trade, and her mother, a former member of the Budapest Opera vocal chorus, established a delicatessen/restaurant in Philadelphia. It was there that Margit learned all the secrets of preparing and serving genuine Hungarian cuisine. Her father went on to become a founding member of the Philadelphia Hungarian-American Republican Club. Margit married Joseph Schmidt, formerly of Vemend, Baranya Megye, Hungary. The couple lived in Philadelphia until 1947 when they moved first to Port Penn then to Middletown, Del. Joseph served for many years as a branch officer in the former Verhovay Aid Association. Margit was known for her lovely mezzo-soprano voice while starring in the leading roles of the Hungarian operettas of Imre Kalman and Ferenc Lehar as performed in the old Munkás Daladra Hall. She was preceeded in death by her husband of 64 years and her younger brother, Julius. She is survived by her son, Joseph Julius Schmidt; her daughter, Margaret Thelma Gentile; three grandsons; and four granddaughters. May she rest in peace. We ask our fellow members to pray for the eternal rest of Mr. Evans, Mrs. Schmidt and all our recently departed members listed below: AUGUST 1997 0001 BRIDGEPORT. CT Mary D.
