January 1997, William Penn Life, Page 7 Itinerary established for tours to Hungary NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — Reservations are now being accepted for two tours to Hungary and Austria being sponsored by the WPA. The first tour will be held from June 12 to 26; the second from Sept. 3 to 17. Both two-week tours will give members and friends of the Association the opportunity to visit some of Europe’s most beautiful and interesting cities and sites. Each tour will feature the same itinerary, beginning with departure from the U.S. aboard Swissair. Guests will enjoy dinner, a movie and breakfast on board. Upon arrival in Vienna, you will meet your English-speaking guide and transfer to your hotel. That evening, you will enjoy a dinner party with good food, drink and music at a hofbrau in Grinzing Village near Vienna. Day Three features an all-day sightseeing tour of Vienna’s major sights, including St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Schoenbrunn Palace and the Hofburg, once the seat of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The evening will be yours to explore this city of music. The next day you will travel to Hungary, visiting Sopron before arriving for the evening in Sárvár. Day Five will include a visit to Lake Balaton, the largest fresh water lake in Europe, and a trip to the world renowned Herend Porcelain factory. After breakfast on Day Six, you’ll visit Gyor with a stop at Bishop’s Castle where Napoleon stayed in 1809. After lunch, you will visit the Benedicting Abbey of Pannonhalma before returning to Sarvar for the evening. The next morning you will begin your journey through the picturesque southern portion of Hungary, stopping for a snack in the Kalocsa area where the most beautiful embroideries are created. You’ll then continue on to Kecskemet for dinner at Tanya Csarda. Continuing your trip across the Plains of Hungary, you will visit the towns of Szolnok and Hortobágy. You’ll have lunch at a Hortobágy csarda and have the chance to hear the Gypsy music of the Great Plains musicians. Then, it’s on to Debrecen for dinner and a relaxing evening. Day Nine you will visit Debrecen University and the famous Deri Museum, then travel to William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation, Inc. ELIGIBILITY RULES FOR 1997 SCHOLARSHIP GRANTS Deadline for Applications is May 15, 1997 The Board of Directors has established the following rules governing eligibility for scholarship recipients: a) The student applying for a scholarship grant must be a Life Benefit Member of the William Penn Association for three (3) years as of January 1 of the year for which application is made. A Life Benefit Member is one who is insured for Life or Endowment benefits. b) A parent or grandparent of the applicant must be a Life Benefit Member of the William Penn Association, or the student must be a child of a deceased member. c) Scholarship grants are awarded to full-time undergraduate students only if they have been accepted by or are currently attending an accredited college, university or school of nursing. d) First-time applicants must submit, along with their application, a transcript of their high school scholastic record, and furnish a copy of their latest SAT/ACT scores. e) Grants are awarded for a two- or four-year period. To be considered for scholarship grants in ensuing years, the student must notify the President of the Scholarship Foundation, by letter, postmarked no later than May 15, 1997, that he or she wishes to continue receiving the scholarship grant. f) Renewal applicants must submit, with their letter requesting renewal, Proof of Enrollment for the new term and a transcript of their scholastic record from the latest term. All renewal applicants must have maintained a minimum Grade Point Average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. The letter requesting renewal must be postmarked no later than May 15, 1997, even if Proof of Enrollment and the transcript are not available by that date. Such documents must be submitted thereafter as soon as they become available. g) Since the awarding of scholarship grants is based in part on the financial need of the applicant's family, the parents of the applicant must file a Confidential Financial Statement on a form provided by the Scholarship Foundation and be willing to provide any and all other information which may be required. h) Applications for scholarship grants must be made on forms furnished by the Scholarship Foundation. All necessary forms may be obtained by writing to: President William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation, Inc. 709 Brighton Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15233 i) All requests for an application and renewal letters must be submitted and signed by the student requesting the grant and mailed to the attention of the President. Letters submitted by a parent or guardian will not be considered. j) We suggest that the student’s application or renewal letter be sent to the President of the Scholarship Foundation via Certified Mail so that there is no question as to the mailing date or receipt of same at the Flome Office. k) Scholarship grants will be awarded by the Executive Committee of the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation, Inc., once each year. Grants will be paid directly to the applicant provided he or she is a member in good standing on the date the grant checks are issued and all of the eligibility requirements stated herein have been met. l) An acknowledgement of the grant should be made by the recipient when received. If for any reason the recipient does not attend college after awarding of the grant, the grant must be returned to the President in its entirety. m) All applications and renewal letters must be postmarked no later than May 15, 1997. Any applications or renewal letters postmarked after that date will not be considered. Tokaj for lunch and a wine tasting at one of the area’s fine vineyards. After another evening in Debrecen, you will begin your trip to the northern region of Hungary and arrive at the quaint village of Eger, home of "Egri Bikaver,” one of Hungary’s most famous fine wines. The tour then moves on to Budapest. Your first full day in Budapest will include visits to the Millenium Monument at Heroes Square, St. Stephen’s crown at the National Museum and Gellert Hill. After a free afternoon, you will rejoin your fellow tour guests for a dinner with folk music and dancing, followed by a sightseeing cruise on the Danube River. Day 12’s morning tour will include all the famous sights in the Buda Hills, including Matthias Church, Fisherman’s Bastion and the National Gallery in Buda Castle. The rest of the day and night are yours to explore this great city. The next day will feature an all-day tour of the Danube Bend. You will visit the old town of Szentendre, the Roman ruins in Esztergom, and the Citadel, before returning to Budapest for the evening. Your final full day in Europe will be yours to do as you wish. In the evening, you will gather with your new friends in your tour group for a gala farewell dinner at one of Budapest’s finest restaurants. After breakfast the next day, its off the Ferihegy airport for the flight home. The cost of this exciting tour is $2,999 per person*, based on double occupancy. Single accommodations may be reserved for an additional $500 per person. The price includes roundtrip airfare from New York, all hotel accommodations, breakfast daily, nine lunches, nine dinners, the Danube cruise, ground transportation in Europe, all sightseeing tours on the itinerary, and all hotel and air taxes and service charges. Guests departing from cities other than New York can arrange connections through the travel agent for an additional add-on fare.
