Page 4, William Penn Life, November 1996 Branch News ‘Branch 10 Barton, OH Branch 40 Martins Ferry, OH Branch 349 Weirton, WV By Louis A. Fodor National Director The rains came down mercilessly for two days before our scheduled grape dance on Oct. 19. Roads were flooded along the way to Someplace Else, the large hall in Martins Ferry we always use for these types of activities. During our drive down from Weirton along the Ohio River, I remarked to my wife that we will be lucky if 25 to 30 people show up for the dance in this kind of weather. The windshield wipers were going faster than the rhythm ol the csárdás. Together with members of the Ohio Valley Hungarian American Cultural Society, we planned this affair back in November 1995. W'e planned to have George Bátyi and his ensemble come from Pittsburgh to play for our pleasure for the evening. They were assisted by our local musicians, namely, Dan Laslo, Lou Fodor, Francis Duska and John Setto. The price of admission included a dinner of goulash with dropped noodles, sausage and sauerkraut, cabbage and noodles and a variety of desserts brought by members. It was a BYOB affair, so no one was denied any of the pleasures they enjoy. The affair was to start at 7:00 p.m., but by 6:30, the room was half full, and the musicians were tuning up. By 7:30, the place held over 100 guests and there was a long line of people heading toward the food tables. It was announced that the winter sausage making will take place at the Mackey Center on Nov. 30 beginning at 9:00 a.m. Our branches will host a jointly-sponsored Christmas party at the same location on Dec. 15. We also help feed the residents of Hartmann Manor on Dec. Ö, as a sign of our gratitude to the Manor for letting us use their dayrooms for our monthly meetings. So many people were involved in organizing our grape dance that it’s hard to recall all their names. But, outstanding were Jim Kalman and Darla Kalman and family, Mary and Joe Tocash, Mary and Gilbert Russ, Helen and Bill Abert, Patti Bennett and her mom, Margaret Moore, Dan Laslo and Margaret, and, of course, my wife Ethel and many others, including all the musicians. This was one night that turned out beyond all expectations, and we all had a heck of a good time. Already, there’s talk of next year’s szüreti bal. And we thank all those members who came out on a night like that! Branch 13 Trenton, NJ By Elsie H. Radvany Branch 13 Secretary Congratulations are in order for our newly elected National Vice President-Secretary Richard W. Toth, FLMI, FIC. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Kathy Novak Branch 28 Reporter It is with deep regret that I inform our readers of the loss of Branch 28 President Steve Sándor. Steve’s untimely death occurred Oct. 13 after several months illness. He leaves behind many family members and friends who will miss him, his strong support for many Hungarian activities, and, especially, his continuous dedication to the William Penn. May our dear friend rest in peace. We will all miss his smiling face. Our sincere sympathy is extended to his family, as well as to all others who have recently lost a loved one. Continuing on in Steve’s spirit of William Penn fellowship, plans are in the works for our branch’s annual children’s Christmas party. It will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Youngstown American Hungarian Club House, 2219 Donald Ave. Santa has already been sent his invitation, so mark that date down. Following the party, we will hold our election of branch officers for 1997. The annual Hungarian Thanksgiving vesper services are scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 26.
