Following the meeting, we will hold our annual children’s Christmas party. There will be appetizing food and refreshments, treats and, last but not least, a visit from Santa Claus. We wish him good luck and good health. Best wishes also to Frances A. Furedy on her retirement. You earned it, France?. We are happy to report that David George recently celebrated his 91st birthday. Our condolences are extended to the family of Steve Fabian of Zanesville, Ohio, who passed away recently at age 83. He was the uncle of Branch President Margaret Boso. The Columbus Hungarian Reformed Church Cultural Association on Oct. 27 held a combined celebration of the 1,100th anniversary of Hungary and the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. The day began with a religious service in Hungarian and English, followed by the laying of a wreath in the churchyard at the monument to the 1956 revolution. The program included remarks by Prof. Dr. Andrew Ludanyi of Ada, Ohio, as well as presentations from the governor’s and mayor’s offices. The day concluded with a delicious pork dinner. Branch 129’s family Christmas party will be held Dec. 14, at the VFW Hall, 495 Princeton Ave. (the same place we’ve held the party for the past five years), beginning at 1:00 p.m. At 2:00 p.m. we will serve cabbage rolls, Hungarian sausage, scalloped potatoes, pastries, pop and refreshments. Santa will visit the children and hand out special gifts to all children under age 15 in attendance. Invitations will be mailed in November. Non-member guests are welcome for $10 per person. On Dec. 11 we will hold our branch election of officers for the coming year. The meeting will be held at the VFW Hall at 1591 Lockburne Road, starting at 7:30 p.m. We hope you will attend. Goydan Branch 226 Secretary & Coordinator Congratulations to Branch 226 member Fred Stipkovits who recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Fred’s Eagle Scout project was working as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity to rehabilitate substandard housing. Fred joined the Cub Scouts at the age of six and crossed over to the Boy Scouts in 1989. He has earned his Arrow of Light and scouting’s Parvuli Dei Catholic religious award. In 1992 he completed the week-long Junior Leaders Training course. He held the troop positions of quartermaster, troop guide, assistant senior patrol leader and senior patrol leader. He attended the 1993 National Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, Va. In 1994 he received his scuba certification in preparation for Troop 7’s 1995 week of scuba diving at the Florida Sea Base, a Boy Scout high adventure base in the Florida Keys. While in high school, Fred played the trumpet in the school’s marching band, orchestra, concert band and pep club. He also participated in Students Against Drunk Drivers, the school newspaper, the environmental club and the varsity track team. He is a member of St. Stephen Church in McKeesport. A William Penn scholarship recipient, Fred attends the Community College of Beaver County where he is working towards a degree in aviation management. Many members of the Stipkovits family are longtime William Penn members, and we are proud of this particular member’s accomplishments. In other news, our branch officers are planning another gala Christmas party to be held on Dec. 8 at the American Legion Hall in White Oak. As always, there will be entertainment, refreshments and a buffet luncheon. Branch 249 Dayton, OH By Anne Marie Schmidt Branch 249 Secretary Branch 249 was saddened by the recent death of Irv Hoffman, one of our William Penn bowlers. Irv had bowled with our local league for many years and was very dedicated to supporting our branch activities with a true spirit of fraternalism. He will be greatly missed by all. Our heartfelt sympathy and prayers are extended to his wife Carol and her family. Congratulations to Michelle La Flame who was recommended by our branch to be our new branch coordinator. Her appointment must now be approved by the Board of Directors. We know Michelle will continued to provide much support and enthusiasm to our branch activities. The local bowling league began its new season on Oct. 20 at Capri Lanes. Those interested in joining our mixed league should contact Debbie Miller at 298- 3929. We look forward to sending a team to the annual tournament in Detroit. Plans are being made for the Christmas party to be held on Dec. 14 at 5:30 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Church hall. A sausage and sloppy joe dinner will be served. There will be entertainment by Taffy and Co. and, of course, a visit from ol’ Santa Claus. So mark your calendars for a fun-filled holiday celebration. Our branch is looking for fresh ideas on fund raising projects and new activities involving our juvenile members. Branch 296 Springdale, PA By Anna Marie Pochan Branch 296 Secretary/Treasurer Happy Thanksgiving to all our members and their families. Branch 296 will hold its annual family Christmas party on Dec. 14 at 1:00 p.m. at the Hungarian Reformed Church, 130 Walters Lane, Springdale. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. We will be collecting nonperishable food items at our Nov. 14 and Dec. 12 meetings and at our Christmas party. Donated items will be given to the local food bank. Please plan to attend these meetings and participate in this worthy project. Congratulations to Melissa Thomas and Reginald Rykaczewski Jr. who were married Sept. 21 at St. Mathias Church in Natrona, Pa. Congratulations also to George and Irene Charles who will be celebrating their 41st wedding anniversary on Nov. 26. George is our branch coordinator. Belated October birthday wishes to Boris Gosciejew, Jennie Wislie, Anna Marie Pochan and National President Pete Charles. Happy birthday wishes to Ralph Schuller and all our members celebrating birthdays in November. We would like to extend our sympathy to the family of George Fazekas who passed away recently. Branch 590 Cape Coral, FL By Joan Mauerman Branch 590 Reporter Sunday, Oct. 20, was a bright and sunny day for our branch picnic and bacon fry on the banks of the Collsahatcher River. The bacon fry was a hit, and guests shared many memories of the olden days. Hungarian tapes were played and Ignatz Strobel played his accordian. There was plenty of food and refreshments. The door prize winners were Danny Kovach, Irene Redden and Betty Minner. Happy birthday to Anthony Di Guilio, Olga Wansa, Rose Darab, Viand ArtSkinski, Mary Veres and Mary Mekler. Betty Bartus was honored with a certificate of appreciation for her many years of devoted service to the branch. Betty has been ill and we were all happy to see her at the picnic. The Plant City Hungarian Club held its Szüreti Bal and Grape Walk on Oct. 13. Native costumes were worn by members of the club. Misha, the Town Crier, was a big hit. Zoli Revey provided the music. The club holds a dinner on the second Sunday of each month. On Thursday, Oct. 24, the Wansa, Fejes and Tomcsak families helped to make kolbász and hurka at the Magyar Presbyterian Church in Lakeland. The products of their labor will be on sale at the monthly dinner held the first Sunday of each month. I would like to thank Ernie Mozer for lighting a candle for me. Thanks, Ernie, and give Mary a big kiss. National Director Mike Tomcsak was the main speaker during a meeting of the Hungarian Club of Cape Coral held Oct. 16 at the Cape Coral Yacht Club. He spoke on ways to save money and the benefits of having life insurance and annuities. More than 45 members attended the meeting. Souvenirs were given to each member. Our condolences to the family of our good friend, Steve Sándor of Youngstown, Ohio, who passed away recently after a long illness. He will be missed. Members made plans for our Communion Mass next year, the upcoming election of officers and our branch’s annual Christmas party, which will be held Dec. 1. Branch 8321 Windber, PA Members of Branch 8321 met Sept. 29 at St. Anthony’s Church to discuss plans for the upcoming Memorial Mass for deceased members.
