Fodor) Branch 129 Columbus, OH By Arpad Sibrik Branch 129 Coordinator Branch 129 members, please take note: At the August branch meeting the members voted to cancel the September picnic due to lack of response. There will be no picnic this year. My wife Priscilla and I recently returned from a two-and-a-half week trip to Hungary, Slovakia and Austria. It was a very good trip, and we had a nice time. My wife, who was born in the U.S.A., was making her first visit to Europe. We visited her mother’s birthplace in Csicser, Slovakia. We went to the Heviz (health spa) at Lake Balaton and took a boat cruise on the lake. We also visited Budapest, Halasz bastya, St. Stephen Church and the museums. We drove to Hortobágy and took a two-hour horse and wagon trip, saw the Szilaj cattle, water buffalo, curly horn sheep and mangalica pigs. The csikósok put on a nice show with their trained horses. In Austria, we visited some old college classmates of mine from the University of Graz. It sure was good to see them. We flew direct from Cleveland to Budapest on Malév Hungarian Airlines in eight hours and 10 minutes. The nicest part of the flight was that we didn’t have to transfer anyplace. The return flight was also direct from Budapest to Cleveland, non-stop also. Travelling on the same flight to Budapest were some of our newest members, the George Payor family. They were going to Budape.: to visit friends and family. The October branch meeting will be held Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the VFW Hall at 1591 Lockbourne Road. Please mark this date on you calendars. For any life insurance needs, please call Arpad Sibrik, branch coordinator, at (614) 231-8024, or write him at 645 S. Kellner Road, Columbus, OH 43209. Branch 159 Phoenixville, PA By Caroline B. Kovach Branch 159 Reporter The congregation of Parkside United Church of Christ of Phoenixville recently hosted a dinner to greet 16 Hungarian exchange students and their chaperones from two high schools in Hungary. The students, ranging in age from 15 to 20, experienced many educational and recreational activities during their three-week stay in the United States. Their trip to the U.S. fulfilled their lifelong dreams. Group trips included visits to New York City, Washington, Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, Philadelphia, Hershey Park and Rehobeth Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Geczy of Street, Md., served as sponsors for the students. Lou and his wife Louise, both teachers at Hartford County (Md.) School District, took sabbatical leaves in the 1994-95 school year to teach English in Gy or, Hungary. In March of this year, Louise and Lou returned to Hungary with 10 American exchange students for a brief tour. Lou was a former resident of Phoenixville and former member of the Parkside Church before moving to Maryland. Branch 159 Coordinator Caroline Kovach welcomed the students on behalf of the William Penn Association and gave each an American and Hungarian flag centerpiece, along with other gifts donated by the Association. Caroline is a lifelong member of the Parkside Church and the majority of the congregation are William Penn members. After the dinner, several families from the Parkside Church took students home with them for a two-night stay before the students continued their tour of the U.S. Branch 349 Weirton, WV By Louis A. Fodor National Director A well-known woman in the Branch 349 area celebrated her 95th birthday Aug. 3 with her children, grandchildren and friends in the former ballroom of the Fort Steuben Hotel in Steubenville, Ohio. Born Pálinkás Juliánná in the town of Apagy, Szabolcs County, Hungary, she emigrated to the U.S. in 1921 and ended up in Yorkville, Ohio, a small coal mining town along the Ohio river. A year later she married Alex Egyed on July 15, 1922, and moved to Weirton where they raised seven children, six girls and one boy. After her husband died, Mrs. Egyed worked hard to raise the family. Two of the girls have since died, but all the other children got married and had many children of their own, all of whom adore their grandmother. The birthday party started with a buffet dinner featuring mostly Hungarian dishes. Music was provided by Dan Laslo, Lou Fodor, Francis Duska, Kenny Duska and Joe Moro. Everyone enjoyed themselves, especially Mrs. Egyed who danced every csárdás. The adults and children in attendance enjoyed beautiful weather, excellent food and lots of good fellowship. The only sad thing about the picnic is that we have to wait a whole year for the next one. We thank all those who worked in any way to make this affair successful. I received a surprise phone call from William Penn member Leo James Lamont from his home in Lantana, Fla. He has been living in Florida since 1972 and has fallen in love with the sunshine state. It was nice to hear him say that he reads the William Penn Life faithfully each month and keeps abreast of the affairs going on in the Altoona area. He is a native of Nanty Glo and was married in the former St. Leo’s parish in Altoona to the former Mary Catherine Becher of Altoona. They are celebrating 61 years of marriage and are the proud parents of nine children. They attend Holy Spirit R. C. Church in Lantana. He has retired after 30 years service in the supervisory force at Bethlehem Steel. Leo, may God bless you and your family. Happy birthday wishes go out to branch member Leo J. Long who will celebrate his 90th birthday in September. Have a happy day, Leo. At the September branch meeting we will be looking ahead and working on the year’s remaining schedule of social and spiritual affairs. All members are most welcome to attend our meetings.
