I I Page 4, William Penn Life, September 1995 Branch News Branch 10 Barton, OH Branch 40 Martins Ferry, OH Branch 349 Weirton, WV By Louis A. Fodor National Director Our three branches, together with the Upper Ohio Valley Hungarian Cultural Society, hosted a picnic Aug. 19 at the City Park in Yorkville, Ohio. The heat was terrific, and we are sure it kept some members away from the picnic and in their air conditioned homes. Still, about 80 persons filled the two shelters we reserved for the affair and wasted little time in reestablishing old friendships and making new ones. Among our guests were some visitors from Columbus who were "repaying” us for the visit we paid them in Columbus the week before. The proceedings started with a covered dish luncheon and were capped off with a traditional bacon fry. One of our members, who was unable to attend because she was in the hospital, asked her daughter to bring her some of the bacon (which she did). Music was supplied by Dan Laslo, Lou Fodor, Francis Duska and son Kenny, with Joe Mora on the base fiddle. Our thanks go to Jim Kalman and his wife Darla who helped with everything, including setting up the fire. We also thank Bill and Helen Albert and Joe and Mary Tocash who were in charge of the affair. We are already looking forward to next year’s picnic. Branch 18 Lincoln Park, MI By Barbara A. House National Director I hope everyone had a wonderful summer. Can you believe it is convention time already? It sure will be great to see all the members from around the United States. Happy 48th wedding anniversary to John and Betty Jacobs, two very dedicated William Penn members. Pretty soon it will be the big 50. Congratulations! Congratulations also to Mr. and Mrs. Kam Johnson on the fifth anniversary. The entire Johnson family are William Penn members. Hi, David and Nancy. We also send our sympathy to Mary Tirpák on the death of her brother. May they all rest in peace. Please keep these families in your hearts and prayers. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Kathy Novak Branch 28 Reporter It’s so hard to believe the sound of school bells is in the air already. We broke all kinds of high temperature records this August in the Youngstown area, with the temperature reaching 100 degrees Aug. 13 for the 69th Hungarian Day. In spite of the heat and humidity, a crowd of nearly 350 people mingled, danced and ate in the true Hungarian tradition. As we remember this successful event, let’s also remember Sunday, Sept. 17—Hungarian Heritage Day at the American Hungarian Club House, 2219 Donald Ave. This event offers free admission to display of Hungarian artifacts, the listening and dancing pleasures of the Steve Pal Band and the aroma, taste and enjoyment of traditional food and pastries which will be for sale. Branch 296 Springdale, PA By Anna Marie Pochan Branch 296 Secretary-Treasurer We are looking forward to seeing Branch 296 members and their families at our fall bacon fry on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 4:00 p.m. at the United Church of Christ, 130 Walters Lane, Springdale. Several branch members attended Hungarian Day at Kennywood Park on Aug. 9. We had a pleasant day enjoying the program, food, music and dancing. Our best wishes go to Branch 296 member Dr. Dan Kupas who this month will open a new family practice in Apollo, Pa, an area which the federal government has designated as being in critical need of more physicians. Our regular monthly meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the United Church of Christ, Springdale. Please plan to attend and share your ideas with us. For all your life insurance needs, please contact Noreen Fritz, FIC, at (412) 821-1837. Branch 352 Coraopolis, PA Michael Furedy enjoys a distinction few of his fellow 11-yearolds share: he is a published poet. Earlier this year, Michael, a member of Branch 352, wrote a poem as part of an assignment in his fifth-grade English class at East Side Elementary School in Marietta, Ga. His poem, entitled "My dog,” was judged most original, and as a reward, it was published in the Atlanta Journal/Constitution. Michael is the son of Chuck and Donna Furedy and the grandson of National Auditing Committee Co-Chairman Charles J. Furedy and his wife Ruth. He is also the nephew of National Vice President-Treasurer Frances A. Furedy and National Director Elmer A. Furedy. Here is Michael’s poem: My dog 1 have a dog and his name is Parker. He is so weird and runs so wild. He loves to eat especially his treats. I love him so like anything I know. His eyes are brown and his nose is black, 1 wonder if I should of called him Mack. He can run like the wind and often likes to sleep in the den. He's a good old dog and as big as a hog.
