Branch 590 Cape Coral, FL By Joan Mauerman Branch 590 Reporter Branch 590 members recently had the pleasure of meeting and talking to National President E. E. Vargo when he spoke at a gathering of the Plant City Hungarian Club. President Vargo spoke about the part of Auburndale, Fla., which is called Kossuthville, or K-Ville. He and National Director Michael F. Tomcsak had the pleasure of meeting Calvin Nemeth, whose father, Joseph, and his family were among 200 families who founded Kossuthville. A street in the once-thriving community was named Nemeth in honor of Joseph Nemeth. The main meeting and eating hall was the Hungarian Inn, where dinner could be had for $1.75. The Kossuthville Volunteer Firefighters building still stands but is not in use. Calvin Nemeth donated some pictures and mementos which will be placed in the Hungarian Heritage Center in New Brunswick, N.J. President Vargo also spoke about his recent trip to Budapest and noted how Hungary is rebuilding itself after the fall of communism. He also noted the work being done by Habitat for Humanity in Hungary to help build decent homes for families there. He said many of Hungary’s beautiful churches are being restored as more and more people are attending worship services. Many of the hotel workers and shopkeepers speak fluent English, and school children are required to attend English classes. Students attend high school for five years, instead of just four. Budapest is a beautiful city and an interesting place to visit, President Vargo said. The opera and theatre houses are fabulous, and the sightseeing cruise on the Danube River is a must for all visitors. The Plant City Hungarian Club’s dinner drew more than 250 guests. President Vargo presented a Herend plate commemorating the William Penn’s centennial to Club President Julia Belovary. The plate will be displayed in the club’s artifact case. President Vargo’s uncle, William Toth, and Olga Toth were at the dinner to greet him. Inother news, we congratulate Gabor Kiss of Apopka, Fla., for the two gold medals he won during the seniors tennis tournament. Special greetings go to those celebrating birthdays and anniversaries this month. Congratulations to Stephen Tomcsak and his beautiful bride Dana Harper who were married Nov. 25 in Massillon, Ohio. Stephen is the nephew of Director Tomcsak and a member of the William Penn. In September, the five surviving children of Julius and Julio Puskar Vargo held a reunion in Serdona, Ariz. The Vargos, who lived in Cleveland, Toledo and Fremont, Ohio, had 11 children all together. The reunion marked the first time in 38 years that the surviving children had all been together. Those attending were: Frank Vargo of Tiffin, Ohio; Irene Slautherbeck and Elizabeth Posey, both of Fort Myers, Fla.; and Julius Vargo and Helen Sabo, both of Phoenix. Needless to say they had a lot to talk about, and more than a few tears were shed. For your insurance needs contact Michael Tomcsak at (813) 858-8071. Happy holidays to all.
