HORVATH SCRANTON, PA — The members of Branch 174 Scranton and the entire Association were saddened by the death of one of our most dedicated members, George A. Horvath, who died unexpectedly Nov. 5, 1994, after being stricken ill at home. He was 76. Mr. Horvath was an active fraternalist on both the local and national level for decades. He served for many years as coordinator for Branch 174 and was a delegate to the last seven General Conventions of the W illiam Penn. At the 32nd General Convention in 1991, the Association presented Mr. Horvath a plaque of appreciation in recognition of his long and dedicated service to the Association, his branch and his fellow members. "Your loyalty to the ideals of our Association,” the plaque reads, "and your countless hours of selfless effort on its behalf have helped our Association to remain a vital presence in the American Hungarian community. "You have earned the respect of our entire Association and served as an example for future generations to follow.” He was born Feb. 25, 1918, in Scranton, son of the late Louis and Agnes Szalai Horvath. He was a retired lace weaver for the Scranton Lace Company and a member of Our Lady of the Abingtons Church. He was a graduate of Lackawana Junior College and an outstanding baseball and basketball player in the area. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy Margalus Horvath; a daughter, Carol Morgan of Scranton; a brother, Robert of Scranton; and a sister, Betty Roscoe of Florida. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Georgia. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Nov. 8 at Our Lady of the Abingtons Church with burial in Cathedral Cemetery. May he rest in peace. SISTER MARY CATHERINE KOENIG (THEOPHORA) READING, PA — Sister Mary Catherine Koenig, a former staff member at the William Penn Home in Wellsburg, W.Va., passed away Sept. 5, 1994, in Reading following a long battle with Parkinson’s disease and cancer. She was 87. She was born Jan. 3, 1907, in Northampton, Pa., and was received as a candidate by the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart in 1924. During her 53 years of active service to her order, she served as a homemaker in several cities, a seamstress at the motherhouse and local superior at St. Joseph-in-the-Hills Retreat House in Malvern. Sister Catherine served on the staff at the William Penn Home from 1962 to 1979, when her failing health necessitated her retirement to the motherhouse. Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated on Sept. 9 with burial in the convent’s cemetery. May she rest in peace. We ask our fellow members to pray for the eternal rest of Mr. Horvath, Sister Catherine and all our recently departed members listed below: OCTOBER 1994 0001 BRIDGEPORT, CT Artemio Torrens 0009 HAZLETON, PA Carl W. All members attending will receive $5 towards their meal. We’ll also have plenty of surprises for you. In the spirit of fraternalism and the holiday season, our branch donated clothing to a needy family in our area. We also donated goodies from Swiss Colony to another needy family. The branch also sent goodies to Diana Vento and 17 children, all of whom suffer from Muscular Dystrophy, at the Selinsgrove Center Unit 4. Diana has been at the center since she was six years old; she is now 43. We received a nice letter of thanks from the center. Christmas favors for shut-ins at a local hospital and a home for the aged. Our branch’s next regular business meeting will be held in January, weather permitting. We hope that all those on the sick list will get well soon. We also send out greetings to all those celebrating a birthday this month. The branch is planning a trip see Mother Angelica and Our Lady of the Angels Monestary in Birmingham, Alabama, this coming June. More information on this trip will be announced in the near future. Happy holidays. May God bless you and your family. 8286 Edith Bailer 0.56 8314 Francis L. Jani 5.00 8347 John F. Brown Jr.10.00 TOTAL $684.43 NOVEMBER 1994 Donor Amt.
