Branch 189 Alliance, OH By Betty Hamby Branch 189 Reporter Members gathered at the club on April 18 when the Sidekicks Band featuring John Adams performed for our dancing and listening pleasure. This month the Midnite Express Band will entertain us. We our planning a yard sale, and we’re asking all members to bring items they wish to donate to the club. We are also planning to host a family outing at either Geauga Lake or Sea World. Details on this activity will be announced in the near future. Branch 189 golfers are urged to get their golf clubs ready and make plans to attend the William Penn’s 10th Annual Golf Tournament July 24 at Turnberry Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio. A sign-up sheet will be posted at the club. Branch 189 is sponsoring a men’s softball team and a young girls’ softball team. Go teams! Branch 226 McKeesport, PA By Alexander J. Goydan Branch 226 Coordinator Michael Benedict, vice president of Branch 226, assumed as of March 1993 the presidency of our branch, following the resignation of former Branch President John Sabo. Bette Hoffman has assumed the office of vice president. On this page is a picture of the stained glass window donated to the Free Hungarian Reformed Church by the "Verhovay Segely Egylet Branch 226.” The church was built in 1992 and is now the home of "The Intersection,” a non-denominational charity which Branch 226 has adopted as its favorite charity. The Intersection provides the needy with clothes, food and money, especially during the holidays. Sister Bonnie, a Catholic nun, is in charge of the effort, and many volunteers assist her in feeding the hungry each week. Branch 226 is going to be wellrepresented at this year’s William Penn bowling tournament. We are sending six men’s and three women’s teams. We hope our teams can produce as many, if not more, champions as they did last year. Branch 800 Altoona, PA By Vincent Frank Branch 800 President It is with much sadness that we report that Charles M. Matko, former president of Branch 800, recently died at his home following an extended illness. Mr. Matko, 55, was buried from St. Catherine of Sienna Catholic Church - in Duncansville, Pa. Our sympathy goes to his wife Judy and two daughters. We also extend our sympathy to Branch Auditor Joseph Palumbo on the death of his brother Jasper, 80, of York, Pa. May the souls of Charles M. Matko and Jasper N. Palumbo rest in peace. The April branch meeting consisted largely of preparing for the branch’s 50-year membership recognition night set for Tuesday, May 4 at 7:30 p.m. We are all looking forward to this affair. It was a pleasure to see member Joe Burger at our April meeting. He expressed an interest in coming to future meetings. We are very happy to have you, Joe. The branch’s May meeting will be the last until September. We will be in recess for the summer months of June, July and August. We wish all mothers a very happy and pleasant Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 9. We hope the weather will cooperate to give you a perfect day. God bless you mothers. Memorial Day is May 31. Please remember in your prayers all of our deceased brothers and sisters. If you have any news to be published in the William Penn Life, please call me at 695-0213.
