Radvany Branch 13 Secretary At its latest monthly meeting, the members of Branch 13 decided to change the date of branch meetings to the third Monday of each month. We also began formulating plans for fraternal activities for the coming year. It is with deep regret that we report the passing of Rose Radvany, wife of former National Director Frank Radvany and mother of Frank J. Radvany, secretary of the Board emeritus. May she rest in peace. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Matthew J. Horvath of Trenton who recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Present for the celebration were their children, including a daughter and granddaughter from Australia. We extend our best wishes to the happy couple. Branch 14 Cleveland, OH By Dawn D. Ward Branch 14 President Branch 14 started 1993 with its first meeting of the new year on Jan. 13. We’re looking forward to another year of fun-filled activities for Branch 14 members. Congratulations to Branch 14 member Felicia Parete who became engaged to Keith Grahl. Felicia was a William Penn scholarship recipient and is a 1990 graduate of John Carroll University. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dante Parete Sr. and the granddaughter of Irene Evans, Branch 14 auditor. The wedding will take place June 5, 1993. Congratulations also to Branch 14 member Sal Kafiti for earning a 4.0 GPA during his first semester as a freshman at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He is a political science major. Keep up the good work, Sal. We were saddened by the death of Branch 14 member Ilona Palasics. Mrs. Palasics was well known in the Hungarian communities of northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania for her musical talent. She sang at many Verhovay and William Penn banquets, picnics and dances. She will also be remembered for helping our city develop medical and social service programs for elderly Hungarian residents in the Buckeye Road area. We extend our sympathy to her husband John and sons John and Joseph. Branch 14 holds its regular monthly meetings on the second Wednesday of each month at 4116 Rockside Road, Independence, at 7:30 p.m. All Branch 14 members are welcome to attend. Branch 15 Chicago, IL By Eva Laczina Branch 15 Secretary On Dec. 20 our branch held its annual Christmas party. As usual, this event was a great success. Many came to celebrate with us, including some new faces, which are always a pleasure to see. This year’s celebration began with Mass at St. Stephan King of Hungary Church, after which everyone descended to the beautiful church hall. As we entered the hall, the enticing aroma of freshly cooked sausage welcomed us. Once settled, we enjoyed a wonderful program put together by the church chorus and Hungarian scout group. Our church chorus sang beautiful Hungarian Christmas songs, and the scout group presented an enchanting show about the birth of Christ. When the scouts’ performance ended, the lights were dimmed and everyone grew quiet. Suddenly, from the rear of the hall, St. Nicholas appeared. The children looked on in wonder as he made his way to the stage. Once on stage, St. Nicholas began distributing gifts to the children as each approached him, reminding them to remain good so that they would receive gifts next year as well. After he had distributed all the gifts, St. Nicholas advised everyone to remain good not only now, but all year. He then made his way to the rear of the hall and left in the same merry fashion as he had entered. By this time we were all quite hungry. Not to worry: there were plenty of sausages and freshly baked bread for everyone to enjoy. For dessert there was a wonderful variety of delicious pastries to choose from, all of which were prepared by the women who attend our church. After the meal, the adults shared memories of past Christmases and dreams for days yet to come, while the children tore through their gifts. It was a joy to see everyone come together in this way. Another Christmastime tradition in Chicago is the annual "Christmas Around the World” exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry. The exhibit includes a display of Christmas trees decorated in the traditional styles of various countries. The Hungarian tree stood tall and proud with a sign beneath it reading "Boldog Karácsony.” Along with the exhibit, there were performances by various ethnic groups, including a wonderful Hungarian show similar to what we enjoyed at the branch Christmas party. We would like to thank all of those who worked hard to make our party a success. All of us at Branch 15 would like to wish all our members and the Home Office staff a wonderful and prosperous 1993.
