Our recent children’s Christmas party was another success. All children participated in an arts and crafts project, with each child decorating an ornament with lace, sequins and beads. After an entertaining movie, the afternoon was topped off with lots of refreshments for everyone. It was a great way to end the year and made us look forward to the following year’s party. We have lots of things on our agenda for the coming year, so watch for future reports in the William Penn Life for updates. Branch 26 Sharon, PA By Betty Panin Branch 26 President Our annual family Christmas party held Dec. 12 drew the largest turnout of members and children to date. We enjoyed a delicious buffet of sauerkraut and kolbász made by the Holy Name Society, with all the trimmings, followed by dessert prepared by members and friends. The children were captivated by Bobo the Clown and his magic tricks. He had many eager volunteers willing to assist him. As a finale he made balloon characters for all the children. Then Santa, portrayed by Bill Pukala, passed out bags of goodies, crayons and coloring books. Many thanks to the Home Office for its assistance in making the party a success and for making it possible for our branch to Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Kathy Novak Branch 28 Reporter A reminder to all Branch 28 members: monthly meetings are held on the third Sunday of each month. Special thanks go to Frank Schauer for providing the pictures from the annual Christmas party. As you can see, we are getting a lot of younger members. Remember to support local Hungarian activities by attending their church dinners, dances and bazaars. Happy Valentine’s Day. Branch 34 Pittsburgh, PA By Barbara Kapinus Branch 34 Coordinator As we put the finishing touches on 1992, our thanks go to those who helped make our children’s Christmas party a tremendous time for all who attended. The talented artwork of Walt Bugielski made the toy soldiers on stage look so life-like. Magician Chuck Caputo presented an entertaining show, and Santa, as usual, was the most popular visitor. Elected recently as branch officers for 1993 were: Bob Kapinus, president; Walt Bugielski, vice president; Andy McNelis, treasurer; Miriam Hager, secretary; and Maria Bistey and Andy McNelis III, auditors. Congratulations to Andy and Marguarite McNelis’ son Andy who graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania Dec. 18 with a degree in criminology. Andy is a WPA four-year scholarship recipient. At present he is in Indiana, Pa., attending the police academy until April 22. Suzanne Pastor, daughter of Suzanne and William Pastor, graduated last June from San Diego University with a degree in Biology. We wish her much success in her future endeavors. Also, Mrs. Pastor recently spent some time in Pittsburgh and was a great help at the branch. Our dear friend Celeste Bugielski was recently in Allegheny General Hospital for more surgery. She is home now, and we know she would appreciate hearing from our branch members. You can write to her at 153 Pius St., Pittsburgh, PA 15203. Branch 44 Akron, OH By Elizabeth K. Darago Branch 44 President It was a bright and sunny winter afternoon when Auditor Alex Darago and member and scholarship recipient Joe Darago delivered our holiday food baskets to three senior citizen-headed families in the Akron/Barberton area. The first family was a woman and her 9-year-old grandson who had lived with her since he was one month old. The second family was a woman with three granddaughters ages 11 to 15. The third family was a woman living in senior citizen housing with her teenaged grandson. All the families were located by the Salvation Army. The food baskets delivered included pie mix and filling, cake mix and frosting, soups, chili, crackers, canned fruits and vegetables, cereal, spaghetti, chicken and dumplings, coffee, tea, soft drinks, sugar, flour, instant lunches, fresh fruit, milk, bread, fresh vegetables, ham, bacon, eggs, hot dogs, ground beef, cheese and juice. The baskets also contained a 1993 William Penn calendar along with a William Penn sponge, coloring books and crayons, pen and bag of Christmas candy. Thanks to the members of Branch 44 who donated cans of food at our meetings and family holiday party. Thanks also to the Home Office for its generosity. "Have a happy holiday season” was answered by a resounding "we will now” from the recipients. Branch 44 members are reminded to update and return their 1993 membership forms by March 1. All updated forms will be entered in the $ 10 drawing to be held in March. Operating expense donations, which fund the quarterly newsletter and meeting refreshments and offset special activity costs, are appreciated and needed, but are not deductible under IRS regulations. The first quarterly newsletter of 1993 will be mailed in March. The first branch meeting of 1993 will be held in April. A 1993 meeting and activity schedule will be published in the William Penn Life and the quarterly newsletter. Insurance needs? Call Alan Szabó at (216) 798-9515. Branch 51 Passaic, NJ By Ernest J. Mozer, Sr. Branch 51 Secretary Several months ago Branch President Arthur Barillo presented to the Rev. Stephen N. Mustos, pastor of St. Stephen R.C. Magyar Church in Passaic, a financial donation from the Home Office. The donation will be used to help defray expenses incurred by Hungarian children who are staying at the church’s convent while they are here for heart surgery. Many of their expenses are covered under the "Gift of Life” program sponsored by Rotary International. But, many incidental items are not. The William Penn’s donation will make these children’s stay here—sometimes lasting several months—much more comfortable and less tense. In a recent letter to National President E. E. Vargo, Rev. Mustos thanked the Association for its generous donation. On behalf of those children who are here now and those who will be coming in the future, your kindness will never be forgotten. May God bless you all, he concluded in his letter. Branch 76 Philadelphia, PA By Clara Fenessy Branch 76 Reporter Our branch held its meeting for the election of officers and the family Christmas party on Dec. 12 at the Philadelphia Hungarian Club. Officers elected for the coming year were: Jack Tokár, president; Joseph Karoly, vice president; Elsie Szemes, treasurer; Clara Fenessy, reporter; and Helen Molnár and Steve Pokorny Jr., auditors. Our newly elected president, Mr. Tokár, thanked the members for the honor bestowed upon him. He asked them for their support and to take an active role in renewed activities at the branch. Following the meeting, we were served a delicious buffet and refreshments, plus treats from Santa. In the true spirit of Christmas we sang Hungarian and traditional Christmas carols, accompanied on the piano by the very talented László Fugedy. We wish to extend our thanks to the Home Office for its contributions to our party and our holiday basket program. Our sincere welcome and best wishes go to young Steve "Pityu” Szemes, who relocated in our area after being away for more than 25 years. He is now recuperating after an extended stay in the hospital.
