Page 4, William Penn Life, December 1992 Branch News Chairman Joseph P. Arvay presents members of the Hóvirág Ensemble with WPA 100th Anniversary plates during the group’s visit to New Jersey. Longtime Branch 14 Cleveland members Patrick and Mel lafigliola celebrated their 55 wedding anniversary Nov. 25. Branch 14 Cleveland, OH jßy Dawn D. Ward Branch 14 President Branch 14’s annual children’s Christmas party, "Breakfast with Santa,” will be held Saturday, Dec. 12, at 10:00 a.m. at the West Side Hungarian Reformed Church. All children who are members of Branch 14 should have received their invitations. All branch 14 adult members are welcome to attend. Please call Dawn Ward at 838-1200 for reservations by Dec. 7. At last year’s party, members donated canned goods and nonperishable food items. The branch hopes to experience a repeat of the overwhelming generosity displayed by its members and is asking each adult member attending this year’s party to contribute $2.50 to be applied toward a donation to the Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland. The Ronald McDonald House is a home away from home for families of children who are hospitalized due to serious illness. Branch 14’s annual Christmas party is a wonderful opportunity to share in fellowship. Of course, Santa’s visit with his sack full of presents is always the highlight of the party. Congratulations to longtime Branch 14 members Pat and Mel lafigliola who celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary Nov. 25. The next branch meeting will be held Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at 4116 Rockside Road in Independence. Please plan to attend. Branch 15 Chicago, IL By Eva Laczina Branch 15 Secretary The members of Branch 15 recently enjoyed our annual Szüreti Bál (Grape Harvest Ball), an event celebrated by Hungarians for centuries. We were once again fortunate to honor a very special guest at our ball: Joseph P. Arvay, the Association’s chairman of the Board, flew in to celebrate this wonderful event with us. It was an honor to have him join us and see our small but prosperous Hungarian community come together and enjoy themselves at our church. As guests slowly trickled in and settled down, the aroma of freshly fried sausage tickled their noses. We enjoyed a delicious disznótoros dinner complete with Hungarian sausage and hurka, diligently prepared by our hardworking women and men. As the evening progressed a pleasant atmosphere and harmonious chatter filled the room as everyone spoke about old times and new. Bright music slid under everyone’s toes. The Moonlight band played a wonderful array of old and new Hungarian favorites along with many other wellknown melodies. Later in the evening we held a raffle for different flavors of delicious pálinka and many other exquisite prizes. The grand prize was a beautiful korona comprised of mouth-watering, crunchy apples and grapes with a bottle of sweet Hungarian wine placed in the center. In all, our Szüreti Bál was a joyous occasion. We hope that our special guest, Chairman Arvay, truly enjoyed himself and found it a memorable event he will share with others. We sincerely hope he was able to see that, even though our Hungarian community is small, we truly try our best to stick together and promote our wonderful culture. We thank Chairman Arvay for taking time out of his busy schedule to celebrate with us. We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of our hard-working ladies and gentlemen for devoting their time and energies to making this event such a success. During the planning for this event, we learned of the death of National President E. E. Vargo’s mother. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Mr. Vargo and his dear family. In other news of local interest, our church this year purchased a beautiful new Baldwin organ and was given a magnificent painting done by 85-year-old Countess Clara Wimpffen. The painting was placed in front of the altar. Both pieces are exquisite works of art which all of us can indulge in. Our next event will be our annual Christmas party to be held on Dec. 20 at noon at St. Stephen King of Hungary Church, 2015 W. Augusta Blvd. We invite all Branch 15 members to join us for this event. Branch 18 Lincoln Park, MI By Barbara Ann House Branch 18 Secretary Pro-Tern We hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving. Can you believe winter is really here? Or did it really ever leave? Not in our area it didn’t. Branch 18 will again be collecting non-perishable food for the needy. The food will be included in baskets which will be delivered for use at Christmastime. A great big William Penn thank you goes to Louie Almassy who offered to chair this charitable event. Louie has offered his place of business, Almassy Florist at 4105 Oakwood Blvd. in Melvindale, as a drop off point for William Penn members. If you cannot deliver your donation, please call 388-6033 to have it picked up. All donations should be dropped off by Dec. 14. This will give us time to purchase whatever is needed to complete the baskets. We will purchase perishable foods with a subsidy from the Home Office. Thanks again for all your help. We invite all our members to get involved in the running of our branch. We meet the first Monday of every month at 7:00 p.m. at 1410 Southfield, Lincoln Park. Please feel free to call me with any news you would like to see in print at 283-2793. Remember, a good branch cannot work without all its members. Have a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. We reflect on the events that have taken place and look forward to 1993 with much hope for unity, peace, good health and love for all. A blessed Christmas to all! Branch 34 Pittsburgh, PA By Barbara Kapinus Branch 34 Coordinator As the holiday season rapidly approaches, plans have been finalized for our children’s Christmas party. The party will be held Saturday, Dec. 12, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Ann’s social hall, 4735 Chatsworth St., Pittsburgh (the same location as last year). We look forward to being with all of you and enjoying a fun time. Annual election of officers is set for Dec. 13 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Ann’s social hall. This is a very important meeting; your vote is your voice in the running of our branch. After the meeting/election, we will share in fellowship with song and good food. We hope to hear soon that branch member Mary Sagi has returned to good health. After being hospitalized on at least two occasions, she must be looking forward to the day when she can be in the familiar surroundings of her home. Also, it was good to learn that Ann Kubus is doing well after her second cataract operation. She has a great nurse. On behalf of the branch officers, we wish you and your loved ones a most joyous and merry Christmas and a healthy and prosperous 1993. Branch 51 Passaic, NJ By Arthur Barillo Branch 51 President On Sept. 6 the Passaic area was honored with a visit from the Hóvirág Ensemble from Veszprém, Hungary. The ensemble delighted the audience by singing many Hungarian songs. The affair took place at St. Stephen’s auditorium in Passaic. Among those present was Joseph P. Arvay, chairman of the Board of the William Penn Association. On behalf of the Association, Chairman Arvay presented the ensemble a financial gift to help defray their expenses. He also gave each member of the ensemble a gift from the Association. We hope all had a good time at our family Christmas party held on Dec. 6. A report on the party will appear in the next issue.
