(Photos by Mary A. Kelly-Lovasz) NASHVILLE — Kim Hayes was as ready as she would ever be. "You all better be watching because I’m only going to do this once,” she said. And with that she flashed a broad smile, took a few quick steps, raised her arms in the air and turned a cartwheel. Kim’s feat provided the exclamation point for a joyous and emotional celebration June 13 marking the successful completion of the National Fraternal Congress of America’s "Raise the Roof” project. During the six-day project, 100 volunteers from various NFCA- member societies helped the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International build two new homes for two deserving families. Among those volunteers were Mary and John Lovász, members of Branch 296 Springdale, Pa. "Next to my marriage, this week was the most fulfilling experience of my life,” John said. Mary agreed. "This was an incredible experience. Most of the volunteers here never met the families before, yet here they were working side by side with these families, these total strangers, to help improve their lives. It just gives you a very good feeling,” she said. Along with the volunteers, the NFCA also provided the funds needed to cover construction costs on the two homes. With the help of the William Penn Association and more than 50 other societies and state fraternal congresses, the NFCA raised about $90,000, far surpassing its goal of $72,000. Nashville was selected as the site for the project because the NFCA will hold its annual meeting there in September. The beneficiaries of this fraternal project included Kim, 24, her two daughters, Quanita, 11, and Frankie, 5, and her son, Frank, 2. The other home is now the residence of Janice Polk, 31, her son, Jason, 11, and her twin daughters, Ashlee Danielle and Alyssa Danielle, 6. Both Kim and Janice work as medical receptionists at Vanderbilt University Hospital. As Habitat homeowners, they were required to make a down payment and agreed to make monthly payments on a 20-year, no interest mortgage. Their mortgage payments will be about $200 a month, which equals half of the $400 each had paid in monthly rent for small apartments. Each homeowner family will also be required to work 500 hours on other Habitat projects in the Nashville area. But, those responsibilities were forgotten for the moment as Kim, Janice and their children cut the ribbons of their new homes. "I just want to thank all of you,” Janice told a crowd of about 100 who had gathered for the dedication ceremonies. Tears running down her cheeks, she added, "I won’t remember most of your names or faces, but I’ll never forget what you’ve done for me and my children.” What Habibat and the NFCA did for them was more than build them a 1,100-square-foot, three bedroom home—they gave both Kim’s and Janice’s families hope and a chance at a better life.
