Branch 10 Weirton, WV Branch 40 Martins Ferry, OH Branch 349 Weirton, WV By Louis A. Fodor National Director The 33rd annual dinner dance sponsored by the Ohio Valley Hungarian American Society (OVHAS) was held April 11 at Someplace Special in Martins Ferry, Ohio. Many of the 180 guests were members of the William Penn branches located in the area. The evening began with greetings from John Laslo, OVHAS president and former mayor of Martins Ferry. After the invocation, pledge of allegiance and singing of the American and Hungarian national anthems, dinner was served. Following the meal, the society’s charter members and other visiting dignitaries were introduced. Then William Penn National Director Louis A. Fodor presented on behalf of the Association a Hungarian flag—with the cimer (or crest)—to the society and explained the significance of the colors and crest on the flag. Mr. Laslo thanked Director Fodor and the Association for this beautiful contribution. The evening’s main speaker was Judge Jennifer Sargus of the Belmont County Common Pleas Court, a third generation Hungarian. She was accompanied to the dinner by her husband, Atty. Edmond Sargus, and her mother, Judge Irene Smart of the State Appellate Court in Dayton, Ohio. Judge Smart is a second generation Hungarian. Judge Sargus recalled her younger days with her grandfather and reading about the customs in Hungarian villages in the 1930’s. A sing-along and dancing followed, with guests enjoying themselves until 12:30 a.m. During the evening Director Fodor also informed guests about the programs the William Penn was sponsoring this year, including the bowling and golf tournaments and the Hungarian language camp. Branch 22 Roebling, NJ By Jennifer Emri Branch 22 Secretary Our branch is beginning to wrap up our events for the year. Our Hungarian classes have come to a very successful close. Our beginner class has accomplished so much since we began last October. We are able now to read Hungarian pretty well, and even though we may not necessarily know all of the words we are saying, we have enough knowledge of the alphabet and limited vocabulary that we can pick up a piece of Hungarian literature and be able to read it. I think that all the beginners deserve a great deal of credit for their accomplishments thus far! As for the advanced class, they, too, have accomplished a great deal in their efforts to polish up their skills. The best part of their time together is that they continue to learn from each other, regardless of their skill level. A big thank you to Zoltán Emri and Maria Tomosi for all of the very hard work they contributed to the classes. We will be resuming in the fall. All class members will be notified when we are ready to begin. We hopf to get some new members in each of our classes as well. Our branch officers have two more monthly meetings before the summer break. We have a few business items to complete before the end of the season, so we will be looking forward to seeing all our branch officers at the next meeting. We will also be making plans for the upcoming branch fall season. We wish everyone a very safe and happy summer.
