The tribute is a joint effort by the William Penn Association and the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America. Anyone knowing of a Hungarian American who served in any branch of the United States military is asked to submit that veteran’s name and address to the committee. Additional information about each veteran’s service record would also be appreciated. Such information could include whether the veteran is living or deceased, whether he or she was killed in action, which branch of the military and war(s) the veteran served in, and highest rank attained. All information gathered will be stored in a computer file at the American Hungarian Foundation’s Hungarian Heritage Center in New Brunswick, N.J. The information would be made available to those researching family histories or other pertinent topics. BR1ANNE MASIROVITS Branch 14 Cleveland, OH Choir’s tour to benefit school The student choir of the Hungarian Reformed College in Kolozsvár, Transylvania (Cluj, Romania) will begin April 11a threeweek concert tour of the United States and Canada. All funds raised during the tour will help construct a new building to house the college. The Hungarian Reformed College in Kolozsvár is the only school in Romania operated by the Hungarian Reformed Church. It is the successor to the famous Apáczay Csere János Reformed College, which educated young minds for 400 years before it was nationalized by the communist regime in 1948. In 1990, after the fall of communism in Romania, the Reformed Church requested that the building which housed the old college be returned to the church, but the request was denied. Local authorities have said current conditions make the return of the building improbable. For now, the new college’s 400 students and 52 faculty members attend and conduct classes in rooms at other schools. The Hungarian Reformed Church in Transylvania desires to reestablish the spirit and spirituality of the former college. It aims to rebuild the college’s tradition of strengthening its students’ identities as ethnic Hungarians in Romania and as Christians. To do so, however, requires that the new college have its own fully-equipped building. With no suitable building available, the church leadership has decided it must erect a new one. Current economic conditions and the lingering effects of four decades of communist rule have limited the church’s material and financial resources. To realize its dream, it has begun looking abroad for help. Part of the fund-raising plan is the North American concert tour by the school’s choir. The choir will appear in a total of 16 cities in the Northeast and Midwest, as well as eastern Canada.
