The children started the afternoon with an arts and crafts project: making gumdrop wreaths. (You’d be surprised how creative kids can be with toothpicks and gumdrops.) Then, after a movie and some refreshments, Santa finally arrived bringing gifts for all the children, which of course they were happy to spend the rest of the afternoon playing with. What a fun way for all of us to start the holidays. The children especially enjoyed themselves. A big thank you to everyone who helped put the party together. Before the party, National Vice President Zoltán B. Emri installed our new branch officers for 1991. They are: Dale Cole, president; Dennis Kish, vice president; Barbara Emri, treasurer; Jennifer Emri, secretary; and Eva Barota and Maria Tomosi, auditors. Congratulations to everyone. A happy and prosperous new year to all William Penn members from Branch 22. Branch 26 Sharon, PA By Betty Panin Branch 26 President We would like to thank the Home Office for its generous donation toward our annual Christmas party, held Dec. 15 at Holy Trinity Auditorium in Farrell, Pa. Having the date of the party published in the William Penn Life attracted more people than we had hoped. Everyone enjoyed our usual buffet of good food and pastries. Games were played and prizes awarded. Our many thanks to Margaret Racketa who once again donated the plush animal toys, money and candy. The arrival of Santa brought joy and merriment. He gave each child a bagful of treats containing candy, fruit, popcorn balls, coloring books and crayons. This past holiday season our branch was happy to participate in the Holiday Basket project. We made several families happy by giving them hams and all the trimmings. We thank our members who donated canned goods and made this project a success. Election of branch officers for 1991 was held at the December meeting and the following were reelected: Betty Panin, president; Louis Varga, vice president; Julie Dobay, recording secretary; and Steve Emery, treasurer. Mr. Emery is also branch coordinator. Again, we thank the Home Office for making the Christmas party and Holiday Basket project successful. A Happy New Year to all our members and the Home Office staff. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Peg Sándor Branch 28 Secretary-Treasurer Every year we say this year’s Christmas party was the best ever, but without a doubt 1990’s was one of the best. But then, wait till next year. The hall was busting at its seams. We saw many new and old faces. Among the 97 people in attendance were 47 children and 50 adults. We would love to see that many at our monthly meetings. Our decorator, the one and only Kathy Novak, did a beautiful job preparing the hall. We don’t know what we would do without her. Santa and Mrs. Claus (Branch Vice President Steve Novak and Hungarian dance instructor Ruthie Fabian) greeted the children with candy canes. "Mr. K” and his magic act had everyone spellbound, including the adults. Our photographer Frank Schauer took pictures of the not-socamera-shy people. Santa also gave each child an envelope containing a monetary gift. A sing-along followed, led by Mrs. Santa. A delicious buffet was served. The menu included: Peg’s famous sloppy Joes, macaroni salad, kolbász and sauerkraut; Kay Novak’s baked beans and cookies; Mary Torok’s apple strudel and very festive Christmas Jell-o; Mary Burscak’s rice and broccoli casserole; Betty Szabo’s kolachi, chips, pretzels and Hungarian candies; and Helen Kaluczsky’s relish tray. Gabe Nameth provided the soft drinks. A short meeting was held for election of officers for 1991. All officers from 1990 were reelected to serve another term. They are: Steve Sándor, president; Steve Novak, vice president; Peg Sándor, secretary-treasurer; and John Kaluczsky and Kay Novak, auditors. The officers were sworn in by Branch Coordinator Gabe Nameth. We thank all who helped make this Christmas party such a success, especially the Home Office. Without its generosity, we could never have done it. Birthday greetings to Kalman Molnár (a Christmas baby) and Joe Vizi. Congratulations also to Mary and Frank Torok on their wedding anniversary. Our wishes for a speedy recovery to Irene Horvath, who recently fell and broke her hip and arm. We hope everyone had a happy holiday season, and wish all a prosperous 1991. Branch 71 Duquesne, PA Branch 89 Homestead, PA By Ruth D. Toth Branch 89 Secretary-Treasurer On Sunday, Dec. 9, Homestead Branch 89 and Duquesne Branch 71 once again held a combined family Christmas party at the Homeville Fire Hall in West Mifflin, Pa. The attendance was great, and we were fortunate to have with us National President E. E. Vargo and his wife Betty. President Vargo welcomed all in attendance and extended greetings from all the National Officers and Directors. Entertainment was provided by John Byrd and his puppets which the children enjoyed immensely. Afterwards, the children sang carols with a few of the children from the audience leading the singing. As they sang "Jingle Bells,” one could hear a familiar "ho, ho, ho” announcing the arrival of Santa Claus. The children were excited to see and talk to him as he circulated through the audience. Santa greeted each child individually with a bag of goodies, a cane filled with candy and a new Continued on Page 7 Santa Listens closely as a young lady gives him her Christmas wish list during Branch 88 Rural Valley, Pa.’s annual Christmas party.
