Got a really nice phone call from Frank Tima Jr. a few days ago. He wanted to let everyone know this is the 40th anniversary for Livonia Home Improvement. Frank Tima Sr. started his business back in 1951. Frank Sr. is retired now, and the business is run by Frank Jr. Frank Jr. also had a message for his dad: "I’m grateful for all your help, I’m grateful you are still available to work when needed, and, most of all, I love you.” Frank Sr. is an auditor and branch photographer at Branch 18. We are grateful for all his hard work, and we love him, too. Congratulations. Welcome back Steve and Julia Danko. That sure was a fast winter, or do they just get shorter as we get older? Special condolences go out to Betty and Bela Kocsis on the loss of Betty’s brother. Our prayers are with you. Special get well wishes to National President E. E. Vargo. We hope you are well on your way to recovery. Congratulations to the Odd Balls who took first place during our recently completed bowling season. Hope to see you all in Pittsburgh at the bowling tournament. If not, have a marvelous summer. I know my mom and I will. Branch 44 Akron, OH________ By Elizabeth K. Darago Branch 44 President In March, President Bush declared April 5 to 7 as national days of thanksgiving to mark the end of the Persian Gulf War. The April 7 meeting of Branch 44 embraced this patriotic theme. Members donated their time to fold, sign, seal and address original Branch 44 memorial cards to honor the military services personnel who were killed during Operation Desert Shield/ Desert Storm. The pearl-grey cards were designed to show our concern and caring for the grieving families. The cards show an American flag at half-staff on the cover and contain one of two sentiments: "A Nation Mourns . . . your Loss,” or, "Thunder Roared, Lightning Flashed, across the desert sand. When battle ceased, the BRAVE were silent. A Nation Mourns your Loss.” Cards with envelopes are available for purchase by individuals or branches at the cost of 10 cards for $7.50. Contact Marilyn Darago, treasurer, at (216) 673- 3347 to order your cards. The red-white-and-blue theme of the April meeting continued for the raffle. A flag flown above the nation’s Capitol and a spring plant were raffled to members. Congratulations to the winners. Branch 51 Passaic, NJ By Ernest J. Mozer Branch 51 Coordinator Robert Bauer, the young boy from Hungary who underwent surgery here, recently returned home to Kismanyuk, Táncsics Megye, with his mother, Magda. Robert spent weeks recuperating in the hospital and at the former convent of St. Stephen’s Church where his mother stayed during this period. The happy ending was made possible through the efforts of Rotary International and its Gift of Life program, along with financial assistance from the William Penn Association. The Association donated funds to help defray expenses incurred by Magda during her stay here. Branch 51 President Arthur Barillo presented a check to Father Mustos of St. Stephen’s on behalf of the branch. Our gift will help other parents who stay at the former convent while their children undergo heart surgery.
