April 1991, William Penn Life, Page 5 WPA finalizes plans for golf tourney PITTSBURGH — The challenge: using a thin metal stick with a somewhat flattened and titled head, you hit a small, hard sphere into a slightly large hole in the ground located approximately 150 yards from the point at which you strike the sphere. The reward: a brand new car. The challenge seems simple, but it isn’t; the reward seems great, and it is! And that reward will go to the first eligible member* who com­pletes that challenge on the desig­nated par-3 hole at the Eighth Annual William Penn Associa­tion National Golf Tournament. The hole-in-one contest will once again be a major feature of the annual tournament to be held July 12 and 13 in Warrendale, Pa., just north of Pittsburgh. This enjoyable fraternal week­end will open Friday, July 12, with a special hospitality recep­tion for all golfers and guests at the Sheraton Inn Pittsburgh North, headquarters for this year’s tournament. All guests will enjoy a free buffet and refreshments as well as the company of friends. The Eighth Annual WPA National Golf Tournament reception also will feature the annual putting contest. For a small fee guests will have the chance to sink a putt and win a prize. All money raised during the putting contest will benefit the William Penn Fraternal Asso­ciation Scholarship Foundation. The 18-hole tournament itself will be played on Saturday, July 13, at the Venango Trail Golf Club. National President E. E. Vargo is scheduled to officially open the tournament with the first tee shot off hole Number 1. At several points along the course, golfers will compete in various skill shot contests de­signed to test their driving and putting abilities. Golfers also will be able to enjoy free food and refreshments after the ninth hole. The weekend’s activities will conclude Saturday night with the annual golf awards banquet at the Sheraton Inn. A cocktail hour will precede the dinner. All dinner guests will be eligible to win one of many door prizes to be given away free after dinner. They also will have a chance to win a new set of golf clubs and bag in the annual auction raffle. Entry fee for the tournament is $30 for William Penn members and $35 for non-members. The fee includes greens fees, carts, a golf gift at Number 1 tee and refreshments along the course. Accommodations at the Shera­ton Inn Pittsburgh North, located at 910 Sheraton Dr., Mars, Pa., are $58 per night for single or double occupancy. All golfers wishing to partici­pate in the tournament must have their reservation forms (below) returned to the Home Office by June 14, 1991. While the Association will crown winners in both men’s and women’s divisions for those shooting the lowest net and low­est gross scores, the real winner that weekend will be the William Penn’s scholarship foundation. In addition to the money raised during Friday’s putting contest, the scholarship foundation will also receive money raised from groups and individuals sponsor­ing holes along the course. Any company, branch or indi­vidual may be designated as the sponsor of one of the tourna­ment’s 18 holes for a $100 dona­tion to the scholarship fund. The name of each sponsor will be placed on a sign at the tee of their particular hole. Those wishing to sponsor holes should contact National Presi­dent E. E. Vargo at the Home Office as soon as possible. The William Penn Board of Directors is pleased to again offer to our members and friends a weekend which promises great fun, great competition and great memories. *Tobe eligible for the hole-in-one contest, a golfer must be a life benefit member of the William Penn Association with at least one year’s premium paid. Only the first eligible golfer to score a hole-in-one on the designated par-3 hole will win the prize.
