Furedy recently was honored as one of two recipients of the 1991 Distinguished Service Award of the American Hungarian Foundation (AHF). Treasurer Furedy and John J. Heldrich, a retired vice president and member of the Board of Directors of Johnson & Johnson, received their awards April 13 at the AHF’s 28th annual Carousel Ball held at the Shackamaxon Golf and Country Club in Scotch Plains, N.J. AHF President Prof. August J. Molnár said the two "are being recognized for their distinguished professional accomplishments on a worldwide basis, for their far reaching community and humanitarian efforts and for enhancing the appreciation and understanding of culture and heritage in America.” In her acceptance speech, Treasurer Furedy said receiving the award was "a humbling experience for me, particularly as I stand before so many of you who have supported the mission and work of the American Hungarian Foundation.” She went on to thank the AHF for "its devotion to furthering the understanding and appreciation of the Hungarian cultural heritage in the United States. Its work must be continued and supported by all of us.” She also praised Prof. Molnár and the Foundation committee for its leadership in furthering the AHF’s cause. Her one regret was that her parents could not be there for the ceremony. "I accept this award on behalf of my parents and others like them: people who have taught their children to be proud of their Hungarian culture and heritage,” she said. Treasurer Furedy thanked the members of her family, her coworkers and her friends, many of whom attended the ball. She extended special thanks to the William Penn and its Board of Directors "for supporting and promoting the causes of our Hungarian people over these many years” and expressed her hope that "they continue to do so in the future.” The award recognizes Treasurer Furedy’s 50 years of service to the Association. She was first employed by the Workingmen’s Sick Benefit Federation, which later merged with the Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association, where she was named assistant to the National Controller.
