In 1987 she was elected Nation­al Treasurer, becoming the first woman elected as a National Offi­cer in the Association’s history. She served the dual role of Na­tional Secretary-Treasurer from February 1990 until the recent election of new National Secre­tary George S. Charles Jr. In addition, she is treasurer of PITTSBURGH — It’s hard to believe that nearly a year has passed since our members gather­ed here for our last national bowling tournament. But, believe it or not, the 48th Annual Nation­al Bowling Tournament and Scholarship Days are now just a few weeks away. While the deadline for bowling entries has passed, you can still make plans to join your fellow members and friends for a fun and exciting fraternal weekend, May 24 to 26 in Pittsburgh. Even if you’re not a bowler, there will be plenty to see and do. You can start your weekend by attending the bowlers’ reception on Friday, May 24, at the Hyatt Regency Pittsburgh, the head­quarters for the tournament. If you plan to stay on Sunday, you can watch the bowling events in the morning, then head to Three Rivers Stadium in the after­noon to catch some Major League Baseball action as the Pirates take on the Phillies. While the weekend is meant to be a fun and relaxing one for our members and guests, there will be some important work being done that weekend. On Friday, the annual meetings of the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Founda­tion, Inc., and Louis L. Varga Scholars Guild will be held at the Hyatt Regency. All bowlers are reminded that to be eligible for the $10,000 prize, a bowler must be a life benefit member of the William Penn Association by April 1, 1991, with at least one year’s premium paid. The prize will be awarded only to those who bowl a 300 game during Saturday’s team event. If two or more elig­ible members bowl a 300 game in that event, the $10,000 prize will be divided equally amongst the winners. But, even if you aren’t bowling for that big prize, we hope you will join us in Pittsburgh this Memorial Day weekend. Varga Scholars Guild will be held during our 48th Annual National Bowling Tournament and Scholarship Days in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, May 24-26,1991. This year the Foundation meeting will be held at the Hyatt Regency Pittsburgh on Friday, May 24,1991, at 5:30 p.m. The Guild will meet immediately following the conclusion of the Foundation meeting. A cordial invitation is extended to you and all members of your branch to attend our Bowling Tournament and Scholarship Days and to enjoy this fraternal activity. We are also kindly ask for your continued support of our scholarship fund. As is stated in the By-Laws of the Association, any branch or individual donating a minimum of $100.00 is eligible to vote at the Annual Meeting. It is our hope that all of our branches and members will continue to support the Scholarship Foundation that has been established by our Association for the purpose of providing our young members assistance in attaining a higher education. Over the year, we have given financial assistance to many of our young members who have gone on to excel in a variety of professions. Their successes—both as professionals and as adults of strong character—convinces us that our support of the Scholarship Founda­tion is just as important as the support we offer to our fraternal, cultural and heritage programs. By helping today’s young members acquire an education, we are helping to better our society and our world for tomorrow.
