This year’s featured entertainment will be Deki Lakatos Sándor, who is well-known throughout Hungary. The concert is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 10. Please contact the club for information and tickets. A special happy birthday to Frank Tima. He always does so much to make us all happy. Thank you, Frank, for all the pictures you take of our activities. They are really appreciated. I won’t say how old he is, but he now has a Medicare card. I also want to send a big thank you to Frank and Agnes Tima. I love my jacket. Margaret Seog has been visiting Irene Gall Korpák. Margaret has been a William Penn member for many years and now resides in Florida. I hope you enjoyed the Holy Cross Festival. It sure was nice to see you again. Congratulations to Julia and Steve Danko on their 49th wedding anniversary. Hope you have many more. We’re looking forward to your 50th. Julia, you have done so much for the William Penn, you deserve a couple of medals. Thanks to my great husband Tom for putting up with me for 24 years. We will celebrate our anniversary on Sept. 24. I love you, Tom. Hope you all had a wonderful summer. Remember, we start bowling again. Yea! The next membership meeting will be held Monday, Sept. 10. The next meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary will be held Monday, Sept. 27. Please come and have a voice in the running of your club. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Peg Sándor Branch 28 Secretary-Treasurer Our annual picnic was held Aug. 10. It was a great success. Mother Nature was nice to us. We had some guests from Hermitage, Mo and Ethel Orbon, and many more. Hungarian tapes were provided by Irene Tomory. Sándor Tollas celebrated his birthday on the same day. His wife Mary made him a birthday cake enjoyed by all. Thanks to all the ladies for their casseroles, pastries and all their help. Let’s not forget the men. They did all the bacon frying. Thanks also to Kathy Novak for her specialty: the watermelon basket. The winner of the Herend commemorative plate raffled off at the picnic was Pauline Vizi. The American Hungarian Home is having its annual Hungarian Day on Sept. 14 from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. at 2219 Donald Ave. Guests will be able to try delicious Hungarian cuisine, such as goulash, stuffed cabbage, noodles and kraut, dobos törte and all the other famous Hungarian delicacies. Irene Nemeth and Dee Gran head the committee charged with organizing the affair. Branch Auditors Kay Novak and John Kalucsky recently reviewed the records of our branch treasury and found all to be in proper order. It was nice to see all our old friends at the William Penn Home Community Festival. I thought we would win at least one of the prizes, but no such luck. We had to leave early to go to another picnic, the annual Hungarian Day at Shady Run. It also was a great event and featured music by Frank Borisz. Branch Coordinator Gabe Nameth is vacationing in California while Joe and Margaret Maty are in Medford, Ore. and Taryn Papalia is in Denver. Irene Nemeth received a visit from her granddaughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Ken Blair, from Germany. My apologies to Mariska Schauer who was instrumental in arranging housing for all the children from Hungary when they were here. Birthday greetings to Branch President Steve Sándor, Branch Vice President Steve Novak and, of course, Sándor Tollas. Our sympathy to the Bennett family in the tragic accidental death of Jimmy. May he rest in peace. Mr. and Mrs. Dan Kalosky celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a reception hosted by their children at the Wick Pollack Inn. Best wishes also to Steve and Peg Sándor on their 33rd anniversary. Let’s all say a prayer for John Rubosky who was seriously ill in North Side Hospital at the time of this writing. Maybe a few get well wishes would cheer him up. We are all pulling for you, John, and know you will make it. We are resuming our meetings after a summer recess. The next meeting will be held Sunday, Sept. 23 at Steve Sandor’s home. If you have any news you would like published in this column, call Peg Sándor at 755-9105. Darago Branch 44 President Thirty-nine happy, fun-loving Branch 44 members took a day bus trip to Wellsburg, W.Va. for the William Penn Home Community Festival Aug. 12. The morning started with a continental breakfast and introduction to Chuck, our bus driver. At 9:45 a.m. we were on the road of the trip to Wellsburg. The two-and-a-half hour trip through country roads and gently rolling countryside was wonderful. But, when we got to Wellsburg, we got lost! We stopped for directions, then started up a hilly road to get us up the mountain. Unfortunately, the road leading to the William Penn Home was the next road! No matter, Chuck backed down the one-lane road with nary a problem. Within 10 minutes he had us at the Festival. We all ate, played the games of chance, toured the facilities and enjoyed the dancing, music and hayrides at the Festival. Rose Naswadi even won an afghan in one of the raffles. After the raffles, Branch 44 members took the bus to the camp and its scenic overlook, then home to Ohio. Members were tired but happy; the day was a success, and we supported a major William Penn activity. Branch 44 has a major activity of its own—the Golden Member Afternoon—set for Saturday, Sept. 22. It will be an afternoon of fine food, festivities and fellowship to honor all our 50-year members. All members are invited to join us at Yokono’s Restaurant in Akron from 12:30 to 4:30. The luncheon will feature a full meal from soup to dessert with a choice of entrees, door prizes and a 50- year recognition pin. Our special guest will be a William Penn National Officer. There’s plenty of free parking and Yokono’s is accessible to the handicapped. The costs of $10 per person includes meal, tax and tip. For reservations, call 673-3347 or complete the form below and send it with your check made out to "William Penn Branch 44” to Marilyn Darago, 1649 Franklin Ave., #8, Kent, OH 44240. All reservations are due by Sept. 17. For your insurance needs, call Alan Szabó at 848-3431. Branch 132 South Bend, IN This year’s participation at the Ethnic Festival was successful due to the tireless efforts of the dedicated men and women of the William Penn Club. Also, special thanks go to those members of the William Penn softball team who helped out at the Ethnic Festival. We are now in the process of organizing the fall bowling leagues for both men and women. If you bowl for fun, then you’ll love bowling here at the William Penn Club. For information, call the office at 287-8245. We held our annual picnic on Aug. 4. Guests enjoyed Hungarian goulash, sausage and langolo. There were games of chance for the young and old, as well as dancing in the evening. Everyone present had an enjoyable time. Remember, for your insurance needs, contact our office at 287- 8245. Branch 226 McKeesport, PA Happy first birthday to Jared Petraglia, who celebrates his birthday Sept. 1. Jared is the son of Home Office employee Kerri Lee Budnick. Although he has been a member for only one year, he looks forward to remaining a member of our branch for many years to come. Branch 349 Weirton, WV Congratulations to branch member Julie Welling of Mingo Junction, Ohio, who recently served as queen of the local Ethnic Community Days. The highlight of her reign occurred when she and King Ed Calvert road a special float during a parade through the community. For the parade, Julie wore a colorful traditional Hungarian costume. In addition to her membership in the William Penn, Julie is a past president of the Ohio Valley Hungarian American Cultural Society and coordinator of the Tri-State Hungarian Social Club in Mingo Junction. Julie was also a first runner-up in the Mrs. Magyar of the Tri-State Area contest.____________________ Branch 352 Coraopolis, PA By Dianne A.
