Our next meeting, election of officers for the coming year, and annual branch Christmas party will all be held Saturday, Dec. 9, at 7:00 p.m. at the Philadelphia Hungarian Club, 1125 Southampton Road. Please attend as we would like many more members to take an active part in our future functions. At this time we wish to extend our most sincere sympathy to the families of Johanna M. Klug and Anthony Thomas, both long time members who recently passed away. May they rest in peace. Our best wishes to all for happiness, good health and peace on Earth during the coming holidays and throughout the new year. Branch 132 South Bend, IN We are happy to report that our annual picnic held this summer was very pleasant and successful. Thanks go to all committee members for their hard work and dedication. We also thank Club members who either sold or bought raffle tickets. The lucky winners were: Stephen G. Danko, first prize; Ernest Modos, second; Beverly Herd, third; Joseph Arvay, fourth; and Albert Ivankovig, fifth. Our branch was busy preparing for a special appearance by famous Hungarian actors, singers and musicians Nov. 17 at the William Penn Hall. The threehour performance was to be followed by dancing until the early morning hours to the music of Antal Szalai and his gypsy orchestra. Our annual free club membership dinner dance will be held Saturday, Dec. 2, at 6:30 p.m. Special invitations were to be mailed. The William Penn Club membership drive is now in progress and will conclude on Dec. 2. In case you have not sent in your membership dues, please do so now. We extend our sympathy to the families of Mary Lula and Frances Pécsi who passed away recently. For your insurance needs, contact Frank J. Wukovits Sr. at 287-8245. Branch 226 McKeesport, PA Branch 226 will hold its annual election of officers on Saturday, Dec. 16, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Social Hall. On Sunday, Dec. 17, we will hold our annual Christmas party at 3:00 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Social Hall. The party will feature entertainment, refreshments, a program for children and adults, and a visit from Santa Claus. Congratulations to Branch 226 member Malvene C. Heyz who recently was crowned Miss Magyar of Western Pennsylvania by the McKeesport Hungarian Social Club. We also congratulate Jonelle Javorsky, also a member of Branch 226, who was chosen as Malvene’s attendant. Both Malvene and Jonelle attend Edinboro University in Edinboro, Pa. Malvene has held various titles during her senior year and has been active in promoting Hungarian culture. She made her first trip to Hungary this summer and hopes to make a return visit there someday. While in Hungary she purchased several Hungarian costumes to add to her collection which she started several years ago. She said the costumes mean a great deal to her because it is rare to be able to buy these articles from Hungary. Miss Magyar and her attendant will be honored at a Christmas dinner dance on Dec. 2 at the Hungarian Social Hall in McKeesport. The young women will also represent the Hungarians of western Pennsylvania at various area activities and will be featured with the William Penn Association Magyar Folk Dancers of McKeesport. Malvene is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Heyz of Versailles Boro. Jonelle is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Javorsky of Daiseytown. Branch 249 Dayton, OH By Albert G. Branch 296 Springdale, PA By Pat Balia Branch 296 Reporter Branch 296 had a full slate of activities these past few months. We had our annual bacon roast which drew lots of guests and beautiful weather. A special thank you to Branch 88 members for attending and bringing bushels of the fall harvest from Alex Chobody’s garden. It was a great treat for all. On Nov. 11 we honored Elmer Charles, national president emeritus, with a banquet at the Springdale Fire Hall. Branch President Ron Balia welcomed the 150 guests in attendance and introduced Mr. Charles’ family and friends. We thank National President Stephen G. Danko and the other members of the Official Family who attended for helping to make this a special night for Elmer. December will also be a busy month with our annual Christmas party to be held Saturday, Dec. 16, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Special guests will be a magician, a character from McDonald’s and, most importantly, Santa. All members please note that the date for the December meeting has been changed to Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m. At this meeting we will elect officers for 1990 and pack treats for the Christmas party. We urge all members to attend. We are proud to announce that Branch 296 has joined in the battle to wipe out illiteracy. Many of our members have become volunteers at the Alle-Kiski Literacy Council to help in this cause. Any member who would like to participate in this program can contact Branch President Ron Balia at 339-4238. Help break the cycle of illiteracy. You can be a part of the solution. Please volunteer your time. Branch 590 Cape Coral, FL By Irene E. Sabo Branch 590 Reporter The members of Branch 590 wish to convey a special thank you to National President Stephen G. Danko and the National Officers for making possible the recent Florida tour of the William Penn Association Hungarian Dancers of Branch 18. The dancers put on a fantastic show Oct. 26 during the meeting of the American-Hungarian Social Club held at the Cape Coral Yacht Club. The performance — especially the first dance of the program, Kalocsai Tánc — brought back memories of long ago. Four years of my younger days were spent in Kalocsa. Seeing these dancers, I recalled the Sunday mornings I spent watching the young girls come home from church, dressed in their holiday finery: pleated skirts (rakott szoknya); embroidered, stiffly starched 4-5 petticoats; colorfully beribboned headdresses; and embroidered papus (slippers) or boots in winter. The William Penn and Branch 18 can be very proud of this group. They won our hearts and praise. Our only regret is that we live so far away from Detroit and are unable to see them perform more often. The Nov. 5 meeting of Branch 590 was held at the Egret Community Hall in Cape Coral. Our special guests at this meeting were former National Presidentjulius Macker, Agency Manager Ken Coleman and his wife Ronda who is a career agent for the Association. The Colemans can be reached by calling 1-800-248-4555. Or you can write to them at 520 West Orange Blossom Trail, Apopka, FL 32712. Election of officers for 1990 will take place Dec. 3. Branch President Irene Redden nominated John Veres to chair the election and nominating committee. Our meeting schedule for 1990 will be announced following the election. Our annual Christmas party will be held Dec. 3 from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Egret Community Hall. If you wish to attend this catered affair, call entertainment chairman John Veres at (813) 549-1394. For servicing your insurance needs, contact Robert Macker, general agent, at (813) 482-3075 or Branch Coordinator Anthony G. Noel at (813) 574-8806.
