Branch 71 Duquesne, PA Branch 71 would like to salute one of its fine young members, Matthew Stephen Kalo, who recently graduated magna cum laude from John Carroll University in Cleveland with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. During his four years at the university, Matthew was active in the American Chemical Society; served as secretary of the preprofessional health society, Alpha Epsilon Delta; and was a member of Alpha Sigma Nu, the National Jesuit Honors Society. During the summer of 1988, he received a National Science Foundation Scholarship to perform research at the University of Alabama. Matthew has also been involved with the undergraduate research program at John Carroll. An outstanding senior chemistry student, Matthew was the recipient of the American Institute of Chemists Award and the General Electric Graduate Fellowship. The latter award provides up to $12,000 for tuition and fees during the first year of graduate work. Matthew has accepted a teaching assistantship in the Chemistry Department of the University of California, San Diego, where he plans on earning his doctorate degree in Biochemistry. Afterwards, he hopes to enjoy a career in teaching and pursuing further research in biochemistry. He is the son of Matthew and Marilyn Kalo of Gibraltar, Mich., and the grandson of Mrs. Mary Kalo of Duquesne, Pa. All are members of the William Penn. We congratulate Matthew on his fine academic achievements and wish him well in his graduate studies and future career. Branch 76 Philadelphia, PA By Steve Szemes Branch 76 Coordinator All reports on this year’s annual national bowling tournament indicated it was one of the best tournaments ever. All credit for its success goes to the committee and those in attendance. We at Branch 76 have pleasant memories of the tournaments that were held in our city in 1958 and 1972. We recently received a pleasant surprise enclosed in a letter — a write-up on our son Stephen which appeared in the Pittsburgh Press. We send our heartfelt thanks to our old friend, former National Secretary Albert Stelkovics, who sent us the letter. The Press article was about Stephen’s election as president and chief executive officer of North Side Deposit Bank of Pittsburgh. He was previously executive vice president and a director of Mercer County Bank in Hermitage, Pa. I wish to thank everyone for their get well cards, calls and thoughtfulness during my recent confinement. For all your insurance needs and related services, please call me at 543-8876. Branch 189 Alliance, OH By Mary L Hull Branch 189 Reporter About two dozen adults and children from Branch 189 Alliance enjoyed an exciting Fourth of July weekend at Gott’s Little Acres. Our members spent their time camping, swimming, and playing horseshoes and cards. They also enjoyed a dance which featured the music of Jim York’s Band. Among those present were Branch President Wilbur Taylor and his wife Geraldine, and one of our many new insured members, Kathy Schafer. Coming events include a Carnation Day Party to be held Aug. 19 hosted by Mary Hull at 846 S. Union, Alliance. Music for dancing will be supplied by D.J. Rick Bowman and a rib cook-off will be led by Eric Woolf. Casseroles will be furnished by the women of the branch. Everyone is welcome to this special party. We hope to see some of our out of town members. In the near future, our branch will also participate in a wine tasting party and a picnic. Details of these events will be announced soon. Branch 226 McKeesport, PA From the McKeesport Daily News Margaret Brown, a member of William Penn Branch 226, was among the American Christians invited to take part in one of six study seminars to the Soviet Union, planned by the National Council of Churches in celebration of the 1,000th anniversary of the founding of the Russian Orthodox Church. She recently presented slides and commentaries on her trip to a gathering at the Central Presbyterian Church in McKeesport. Mrs. Brown recalled visits to Russian Orthodox and other churches for services attended by capacity crowds of worshippers. She and other travelers taking part in the 1988 pilgrimage to Russia also talked with official government leaders and with groups including the peace and friendship societies and women’s and youth committees. The group visited several cities, including Moscow, Zagorsk, Leningrad and Kiev, where many of the millenium celebrations were held. Branch 278 Omaha, NE By Elizabeth Papp Branch 278 Coordinator Susan Simcho, a member of Branch 278, celebrated her 100th birthday on July 14 with a mass and luncheon at the Skyline Manor. Archbishop Sheehan celebrated the mass at the Manor where Mrs. Simcho has been a resident for 15 years. In 1915, Mrs. Simcho became a charter member of the Verhovay’s Omaha branch, which later became Branch 278 of the William Penn Association. Our meetings were held in her home for many years. She was awarded the Illustrious Citation for her service to the William Penn. All of us at Branch 278 extend our best wishes to Mrs. Simcho. Branch 705 Mayville, WI By John J. Lippert Branch 705 Coordinator The Branch 705 trapshooting team once again placed itself in competition at the Wisconsin State five-man shoot, held in Waukesha on June 25. This is one of the biggest shoots of the year and was host to more than 200 teams from every part of Wisconsin. We were scheduled to shoot at 10:00 a.m. that day on a trap directly in front of the clubhouse. The Milwaukee television stations had their cameras there, so the "William Penn Association” written on the backs of our shooting vests was very obvious on the evening sporting news. The team missed the class D championship by one bird, with a total score of 451. The individual scores were: Mike Wald, 94 out of a possible 100 targets; Steve Wald, 84; Wayne Wagner, 92; Jack Lippert, 94; and Darlene Wagner, 87. Branch 800 Altoona, PA By Leroy E.
