Page 4, William Penn Life, April 1989 Credit Unions grow with help of volunteers The Credit Union movement was born in 1848 in a tine German village. From there it mushroomed, spreading from continent to continent. Today, member savings exceed $131 billion and member loans amount to $92 million. The movement was founded by volunteers — and volunteers still make up the foundation upon which these unique financial institutions are built. A good example of this special spirit in action is our Credit Union’s board of directors. Why do they devote so many hours of their personal time to the organization? It can’t be for the money — they are unpaid. Why would they work so hard for no pay and little recognition? The answer is simple. It is a labor of love. Board members spend many hours preparing for and attending meetings and reviewing financial data. They attend numerous educational sessions to keep pace with constantly changing rules and regulations and a growing number of financial services and products. They also take part in Pennsylvania Credit Union League chapter activities, sometimes serving on state, national and even international boards to further the growth of the movement. It is love and empathy for humankind that motivates them. They know that the Credit Union movement improves the quality of life of its members. Because our Credit Union is truly democratically owned and operated, your vote is vital to keeping informed, dedicated individuals representing you in our organization. Be an active member of our Credit Union. Take advantage of all the privileges of being a Credit Union member. Make use of all the services available to you. Attend the annual meeting. Vote. And support our board of directors. There is an old saying that goes, "It’s not always what you know, but who you know that counts.” At our Credit Union, it’s true. You know who the owners are. You are one of them. You know the board of directors. They are your fellow members. You know who has both a voice and a vote in the operation of our Credit Union. You do. Credit Union membership is a privilege that is not open to everyone. Like the many freedoms enjoyed in this country, it is a special benefit that is sometimes taken for granted. Why not make the most of your membership in the unique, "people-helpingpeople” financial cooperative movement? Save and borrow at our Credit Union where the "not-for-profit” philosophy keeps rates beneficial and you are a valued member, not a customer account number.
