Katona, a member of Branch 14, has received national recognition for a plan she designed for marketing business education. Bonni, a teacher at the Northeast Career Center in Columbus, Ohio, was one of six secondary and post-secondary teachers to receive this year’s EDDY Award for Marketing Business Education. The award was sponsored by Gregg/McGraw-Hill Publishing Company. The winners were announced at the convention of the National Business Educators Association held March 28 to April 1 in Denver, Colo. Her plan will be published in a Gregg/McGraw-Hill publication for business teachers this fall. Bonni’s plan involves recruiting high school juniors into her Legal Secretary program at the Northeast Career Center. The two-year program trains students in office skills needed to work in law firms and other law-related office positions. We at Branch 14 our proud of Bonni and congratulate her on receiving this national honor. Summer is coming to a close, and it’s certainly been an active one for Branch 14. It started with hosting the national golf tournament in July. The party trays arranged by branch members Gayle Cendrowski, Carol Perkins, and Dawn Ward and the delicious pastries baked by Irene Evans, Rose Kaul, Barbara Toth, and Joanne Sedensky were enjoyed by all at the putting contest Friday evening. The branch also provided beautiful centerpieces on every table at the golf banquet Saturday. Thanks to all Branch 14 members who helped with the golf tournament. We certainly displayed a fraternal giving spirit that will be remembered by all who visited our fair city. More than 100 members attended an outing at Geauga Lake Park on Aug. 14. Several William Penn members sought refuge in "The Wave”, beating the 95- degree heat. Branch 14 also hosted a scholarship dinner on Aug. 11 at Mar Cal’s Restaurant in Middleburg Heights. The scholarship recipients honored were Charlene Evans, Lynn Sedensky, and David Horvath. The next project on the busy Branch 14 agenda is a dinnerdance to be held Saturday, Sept. 10 at St. John’s Byzantine Church in Solon. A delicious Hungarian meal will be served family style, and music will be provided by Frank Boricz and his Orchestra. Tickets are $15 and B.Y.O.B. Call chairperson Violet Sarosi at 248-9012 for tickets. Monthly meetings will resume Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 7:30 p.m. at the VFW meeting hall at 4116 Rockside Road, Independence. Please attend and get involved in the planning of all the branch activities. Hope to see you there. Branch 18 Detroit, MI By Barbara House Branch 18 Secretary I would like to thank J ulia Danko and Andy Toth for filling in for me last month while I was on vacation. It was an important article. Thanks. I was visiting my daughter Debbie and her family in South Carolina. I’m sure a lot of you know her. Debbie helped Darlene organize our dance group a few years ago. She is now married and is the mother of two boys, both of whom are William Penn members. She sends her love to all her old friends. At this writing, Julia and Steve Danko are winging their way to Hungary. I sure do hope they have a great vacation and that the weather is a lot cooler there. You will be missed. Hurry home. Irene Gall Korpák is also on vacation. She is touring Spain, Portugal and Casablanca. I’m sure she will have some great stories when she comes back. Have a wonderful time. I hope God watches over all our travelers. On Aug. 6, Irene threw a 65th birthday party for her husband Rudy. It was attended by close friends and family. Rudy will retire after the first of the year. Happy Birthday, Rudy. I know a good time was had by all. By now, many of of you have seen our new club. Isn’t it beautiful? A great big thanks to a lot of people, but special thanks to John and Helen Molnár. They really put the whole thing together and followed it through every step of the way. If you haven’t seen it, you have a very big pleasant surprise waiting for you. Please stop by and see. Santa Ferenc and his entourage will again be in the Detroit area. Manager Szatmári is negotiating with them to fit us in their busy schedule. That is a night not to be missed. Please check with Steve on the date. Before closing I again would like to remind you that if you are not receiving your William Penn Life to please let me know. We want everyone to share in all our news and happenings. Good luck in the coming bowling season. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Helen R. Kaluczky Branch 28 Reporter Have you looked at the calendar lately? Labor Day is upon us. We hope this terrible, long, hot summer of 1988 will come to an end soon. We practically swam through all the picnics and community affairs. It seemed that when an event was scheduled, that was when the air conditioners, fans, and even electricity gave up the ghost. Sometimes when they were all working, it didn’t help much. Well, it surely will be a tale to tell if we live through it all. We can put "I survived the summer of ’88” on our T-shirts. When Hungarian Day was celebrated recently at Kennywood Park near Pittsburgh, Peg and Steve Sándor and Kathy, Kay, and Steve Novak were there to give it their best. We have to give them a lot of credit for going and taking in the Pittsburgh scene as well as the different festivals, dinners, and picnics that went on, including the St. Stephen of Hungary picnic in July, Magyar Nap at the Shady Run picnic grounds on Aug. 14, and various affairs at the Donald Avenue American Hungarian Club. My husband John and I had our own celebration on Aug. 13. It was our 50th wedding anniversary. Our children were here to celebrate with us, as were our extended family and all of their children. From Maine, Connecticut, Florida, and California, they all came to wish us joy and many more years of happiness. We really had a wonderful time and received many beautiful cards and gifts. We had said, "please, no gifts,” but no one paid any attention to our pleas. However, the gifts and cards are truly appreciated, and we sincerely thank each and every one of you. We hope to see you all at the next branch meeting which will be held Sept. 18 at the home of Peg and Steve Sándor, 133 Coitsville-Struthers Road, Lowellville, phone 755-9105. We will be planning our bingo/ card party for October and perhaps laying some of the groundwork for our family Christmas party. We would like you to all come and join with us in fraternal fellowship. For answers to all your insurance questions and needs, call William Penn special representative Alan Szabó at 792-7851 or Branch 28 Coordinator Gabe Nameth at 792-8145. The last installment In 1983, a severe storm caused heavy damage to a club operated by Branch 88 Rural Valley, Pa. The Association loaned the branch the money to make the necessary renovations. Recently, several officers from Branch 88 visited the Home Office to pay the last installment on that loan. Celebrating the happy event were (from left) National President Stepheri G. Danko, Branch Trustee Gino Cicchiani, Corrine Cicchiani, Branch Coordinator Alex Chobody, Ann Chobody, Branch Auditor Joe Chobody, and National Treasurer Frances A. Furedy.
