The ladies who worked in the kitchen for the recent Branch 296 Springdale, Pa., picnic take a break from their labors. Branch 800 President Leroy Douglas (right) presents Kent Kiesewetter with the branch’s award for earning the highest grades in his religion class. Branch 89 Homestead, PA By Ruth D. Toth Branch 89 Publicity Coordinator On July 16 Penn’s Scenic View, located in the beautiful Laurel Highlands, was the scene of a picnic sponsored by Branch 89 for its members. The weather was perfect and our turnout was great. Those who went fishing found the catch to be excellent even though they threw the fish back into the lake. The children also had fun exploring the outdoors and being able to run around and play. The highlight of the afternoon was the famous traditional Hungarian bacon roast, szalonnasutes. This is something everyone looks forward to and enjoys. As they sat around frying the bacon and patiently waiting for the bacon to drip on the delicious rye bread, the adults enjoyed reminiscing about the "yesterdays” and each one had something interesting to add to the conversation. For dinner, a scrumptious buffet was set with a large selection of food. Everyone was able to find something to their liking. There also was an assortment of delicious pastries which were a hit with all. There were beverages for the adults and a variety of beverages for the children which they enjoyed. After dinner some of the men played cards while the other adults sat on the deck and carried on conversations as they listened to Hungarian music. It really was a great ending to a perfect day. As the day came to an end, a good many adults with their families decided to stay over and spend another day in the mountains. There was plenty of food left over and lodging in the new "stable” was available. Needless to say, everyone had a good time and tentative plans were made to have an outing in the fall so they can take in the beauty of the leaves as they change their colors. Branch President Elmer Toth and the other branch officers would like to thank all the members who helped make the affair a success. For future branch events check and read your William Penn Life. Branch 132 South Bend, IN The South Bend William Penn Club held its annual Homecoming Picnic Aug. 6 on the club grounds. The event featured all kinds of games for both young and old and a variety of delicious homemade Hungarian foods, including Hungarian sausage, goulash, and langalo. Music was provided by the Seasons Orchestra. Many, many thanks are due to those dedicated club members who worked so hard for days to make our participation in the Ethnic Festival a success. We are proud of each and every one of them. The lifeblood of our club is bowling. We need help in organizing leagues for both men and women. Please call either the office at 287-8245 or the club room at 237-9171. The junior league is also seeking bowlers between the ages of 8 and 17. The junior league bowls on Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. We are proud of our bowling alleys being in excellent condition along with the electronic score keepers. Our club membership drive remains in progress until Nov. 25. We take pride in the benefits we provide our members, such as our annual free membership dinner-dance. We also sponsor an annual family Christmas party and other charitable and fraternal events. The prices for refreshments served in the club rooms are most reasonable. Members’ participation in promoting the financial endeavors of our club is vital if we are to function successfully. All ideas, suggestions, and recommendations are welcome. Please attend our meetings held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. Branch 189 Alliance, OH By Marie Duruttya Branch 189 Reporter A surprise farewell party was held for Andrian Amos, who was leaving Branch 189 and moving to North Carolina. A monetary gift from the members was presented to Mr. Amos by Mike Duruttya, who wished him and his wife Godspeed, good luck, much happiness, and good health. The committee for the farewell party was Mable Leech and Lola Longbardi. Athletic Club President Marlin Bowers, with committee person Mable Leech, organized a bus trip to North Field for the horse races. The Athletic members had an enjoyable time. The Athletic picnic was held Aug. 28 at Suntan Acres. The "Barber” brothers, famous for the frying of sausage, were on hand to do their annual good deed. We at Branch 189 wish Karl Trumpeter a speedy recovery. He was in Aultman Hospital, but is now at home. Get better, Karl. We missed you and Dorothy at the golf tournament and banquet. I read in our local newspaper that, because of the hot weather and dry spell, we should put a container of water outside at night for the very thirsty wild animals, such as rabbits and squirrels. Well, this reporter doesn’t mind putting the water out for the rabbits, but since the squirrels ate all the English walnuts from my two trees and left me none with which to bake my Hungarian nut bread, 1 will have to put a "For Rabbits Only” sign on my water container. We are now serving breakfast again at our club. Come and enjoy Lola Longbardi’s fine cooking. Branch 296 Springdale, PA By Pat Balia Branch 296 Reporter Branch 296 held its annual picnic July 24 at Assumption Church picnic grounds in Leechburg, Pa. Branch President Ron Balia wants to thank all the people who donated their time and effort to make the picnic such a success. The branch officers and their wives also attended the Family Festival held at the William Penn Home in Wellsburg, W.Va. on Aug. 7. A nice time was had by all. We were glad to hear that Elmer Charles, president emeritus, is home from the hospital. We wish him a speedy recovery. The next gathering for Branch 296 will be a bacon roast in September. Branch 800 Altoona, PA By Harold E. Robinson Branch 800 Reporter Every year our branch presents an award to the high school senior who earns the highest mark in religion class. This year’s award went to Kent Kiesewetter of 3300 Beal Ave., Altoona. Kent intends to continue his education at Juniata College in Huntington, Pa. After graduating from college, he plans to teach in the field of education. Our corn boil and wiener roast were held Aug. 17 at Highland Park in Altoona. At first, we were afraid we might not be able to get corn this year because of the drought. But, we found we were able to get corn and were able to plan for the big day.
