A másik ifjú tagunk Katona László, aki minden vasárnap hűségesen ministrál a 10 órai magyar szentmisen. Gratulálunk az ifjú tagoknak, de különösen gratulálunk a szülőknek, hogy ilyen magyar ifjakat nevelnek. Büszkék Lehetnek. By Vera Petruska Branch 8 President Branch 8 held its annual election of officers for 1988 on Sunday, Dec. 13, 1987 at the Social hall of the Johnstown Hungarian Reformed Church, corner Ninth Avenue and Chestnut Street. Re-elected for the 12th consecutive term as president of Branch 8 was Vera Petruska of 961 East Ave. The other officers elected are as follows: Elizabeth Maurer, recording secretary; Steve Petruska, Jr., treasurer; and Elaine M. Petruska and Mrs. Willard Maurer, auditors. Branch 8 meetings are held on the second Sunday of each month at 2:00 p.m. All Branch 8 members are cordially invited to attend and take part. After installing our new officers, we held our children’s Christmas party. Santa arrived with his merry and cheery "Ho! Ho! Ho!” as he greeted the children and their parents. Later Santa sat by the Christmas tree, and the children whispered what they wanted for Christmas, while the parents and other children enjoyed the Christmas music being played. The children were given a yuletide money gift, and carol and coloring books. Parents received our 1988 calendars. Everybody was busy enjoying the food, refreshments and goodies that our branch officers prepared, and the children and their parents were conversing with one another when Santa suddenly disappeared. Santa was really enjoyed by all. The officers of Branch 8 wish to thank the Board of Directors for their generous allocation toward the children’s Christmas party. Also, thanks to the Home Office staff for getting the invitations, carol and coloring books and the William Penn calendars here on time. Members who want their 1988 calendars can get them at our regular meetings. We of Branch 8 try to show these lovely and beautiful children and their parents that the William Penn Association truthfully believes in their future. Branch 8 officers and members extend to all a Blessed Holiday Season and a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Branch 14 Cleveland, OH By Dawn Ward Branch 14 Corresponding Secretary Branch 14 held its monthly meeting on Feb. 10, at which time the members decided to hold a dinner-dance this fall. The date of the dinner-dance will be determined and announced soon. Hams will be raffled at the branch’s March meeting. Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month at 4116 Rockside Road, Independence, beginning at 7:30 p.m. All Branch 14 members are welcome to attend and take a chance at winning a ham for their Easter dinner. Cleveland will be the host city for the William Penn’s annual golf tournament this year. The tournament will be played at the Brunswick Hills Golf Club in nearby Brunswick. Branch Sergeant-At-Arms Gene Toth and Regional Sales Manager Jeff Ward are busy finalizing hotel and banquet arrangements. More information on the tournament will appear in next month’s publication. Gene and Jeff would appreciate any members willing to help plan the tournament. If you would like to work on the golf tournament committee, call (216) 238-8500. Branch 19 New Brunswick By Ruth Vasvary Branch 19 Vice President Once again activities in the New Brunswick area are on the upbeat. Dinners are being held by many organizations, and Branch 19 has been represented at most of them. Chairman of the Board Joseph Arvay, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Hegedűs, Louis Keller, Ernest Arvay and Ruth Vasvary recently attended the installation of the new officers of the Hungarian American Athletic Club. Chairman Arvay presented incoming HAAC President Joseph Vargras with a William Penn Association Centennial Herend plate. In his presentation, Chairman Arvay noted with special interest that the HAAC closely parallels the William Penn, in that both were organized by 13 men and espouse the same principles of sound mind - sound body - for God and for Country. Those principles are a legend amongst Hungarians, and are sought by all of us. The club was organized 75 years ago. Congratulations and best wishes to the new officers. Mr. and Mrs. Alex Hody represented the Association at the Rahway Hungarian Citizens Club’s recent affair. Mr. Hody presented a William Penn Association Centennial Herend plate to Mrs. Erdei, the incoming RHCC President. Branch 19 is now involved with the Hungarian Civic Association in planning the June 4 "Mammoth Hungarian Festival.” Chairman Arvay also attended a recent meeting of all Hungarian churches and organizations to plan the March 15 celebration of the Hungarian revolution of 1848. Branch 19 is also very active in planning for the combined New Jersey Branches Dinner Dance to be held on April 16, 1988 at the Hungarian American Athletic Club. You are all invited and shall be receiving your invitation soon. For your insurance needs, please call Alex Hody at (201) 249-7752. We would also like to pass on to you a delicious recipe for Torkedli, or dainty bite-sized Palacsintás. Torkedli !4 yeast cake (dissolve with V4- cup flour, Vi-cup warm milk, 1 tblsp. sugar — let rest 10 min.) 114-cup flour %-cup warm milk &. 3 tblsp. sour cream, mixed together 3 eggs, beaten 2 tblsp. sugar Vi tsp. salt 1 drop vanilla Beat eggs well; add sugar, salt (to taste), vanilla. Beat and add milk and sour cream alternately with the flour. Beat well. Add the yeast mixture. Mix it in well with wooden spoon. Mixture should be just a bit heavier than would be for palacsinta. If too heavy, add a little more warm milk; if too light, add a litde flour. Now, put into a warm spot in kitchen, cover; let rest and rise one-half hour. Fry torkedlis in a greased frying pan (the kind that has 6-8 little dips in it as in muffin pans). Fry each side to golden; 2-3 minutes. Turn, fry other side, using a spoonful for each one. Paste two together with jams, jelly or preserves. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve hot. Branch 27 Toledo, OH_______ By Mary Ivancso Branch 27 Coordinator My, oh my, did we have a busy month! Frances Fritsche of Well Fleet, Neb. and her daugher (and our sister-in-law) Elvira Ivancso of North Platte, Neb. called to tell us that they look forward to reading the William Penn Life every month. Joe and Alice Horvath also enjoy our column. My husband Steve and I spent 10 beautiful days in Hollywood, Fla. with National Advisory Board member Stephen Danko, his wife Julia and their grandson Derek Danko. We saw and talked with many William Penn members, including Joe and Mary Szalay, Joe’s brother Danny and his wife Monnie, and Joe’s sister Theresa Szalay. We also met a wonderful gentleman, Louis Kato, who visited and spent some time with us every day. Then, we drove across Alligator Alley to Fort Myers where we visited with Les and Elvira Kubovits. Imagine — reaching up and picking a tangerine and grapefruit from their trees. On Sunday, we had dinner at the Kossuth Hall in Miami, where it was so nice to see Betty Compton after nearly seven years. Wilma and Andy Demeter were in Hollywood, as were Rudy and Dorothy Nagy. Steve also saw former National President Julius Macker and spoke with former National Vice President Albert Stelkovics. A1 and his wife Mary live in Delray Beach. After coming home from Florida, we went on to South Bend, Ind. Coming along with us was the Rev. Martin Hernacy of St. Stephen’s Church. Father spent the day with his old friend Msgr. Peterson. We had a wonderful day — even though it snowed all day — with bowling tournament co-administrators Frank J. Wukovits Sr. and Frank J. Wukovits Jr. We took a tour of the Marriott Hotel where our bowlers will be staying during the tournament. The rooms are beautiful and the luncheon we had in the hotel restaurant was very appetizing and served promptly. Then, it was on to Chippewa Lanes, the site of this year’s tournament, which can accommodate up to 70 teams. Our last stop was at the South Bend Chamber of Commerce. The chamber’s staff is working with tournament hosts Branch 132 to ensure a pleasant visit for all our bowlers and guests. Around 5:00 p.m. that day we met with Goldie Pal, president of Branch 132 Ladies Auxiliary, Mary Ann Wukovits, Gary Clevenger, Les Baumgartner and Ruth. They are all working hard to make the 45th annual bowling tournament one that bowlers and guests will never forget. So, come on, Toledo — get your teams ready. Entries will be in the mail soon. Send them in as soon as possible, okay? Our sympathies to the family of Mr. Nagy, who passed away in January. We wish a speedy recovery to Rose Bodnar, who broke her ankle, and to Veronica Szabó. For your insurance needs, please call me at 691-9641. I’m retired now and have all day to talk. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Helen Kaluczky Branch 28 Reporter At our January meeting, we discussed bus transportation to South Bend, Ind., for the bowling tournament. If any of our neighboring branches are interested in such transportation (leaving from Youngstown) please contact Irene Nemeth, our branch secretary, 328 Bon Air Ave., Youngstown, Ohio 44509, phone 792-2620, or Dee Gran, 904 Upton Road, Youngstown, Ohio 44509, phone 799-7008. We would like to hear from you — Steve Emery, Zoltán Cibulas, perhaps Louis Fodor — as well as all the bowlers in your branches as to the possibility of us all going to South Bend together in one bus. Parking arrangements would have to be made for your cars here in town. I imagine that could be solved by Dee, our tour guide. So please "kick” it around a -----------Continued on Page 5
