Continued from Page 4 Looking back to 1987, we enjoyed meeting with the branch members on different occasions — Easter egg decorating classes, the dance ensemble from Budapest, the bowling tournament in Toledo, the trip to Wellsburg, W.Va., all the picnics, dances, and dinners as well as festivals, the convention in Toronto, and the crowning point of all the activities, our own Branch 28 Christmas party. It was a very busy year and maybe this year we can sort of rest on our laurels for a little while — at least through the winter. Looking forward to 1988, the Endre (Cseh) Check family keeps us informed of all the social events on their "Souvenirs of Hungary” program, heard on WKTL-90.7 FM Struthers, Saturday from noon to 1:30 p.m. For our spiritual needs and events, the Rev. Sándor Farkas and Father George Mészáros host the Hungarian language ecumenical broadcast on Sundays from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. on WBBW- 1240 AM on your radio dial. So tune them in and keep posted on all things Hungarian. Hope by this time that all you river residents are getting clean water. We are all in this world together and what hurts you, hurts us, no matter if we are miles away from you. We do care and trust that our city, state and federal governments will also care and act affirmatively with lots of financial and physical help. Referring to branch meetings, we have them every month at President Steve Sandor’s home, 133 Coitsville-Struthers Road, on the third Sunday of the month at 2:30 p.m. Sometimes we do have conflicting dates of other meetings as there are only so many Sundays in the month, but we try our best. However, you can call either Steve at 755-9105 or John Kaluczky at 782-9851 to verify the time before you drive out there for a meeting and find out you’re either too early or too late. If you have some insurance business to transact, please call Gabe Nameth, Branch 28 Coordinator, phone no. (216) 792-8145. At this time we would like to extend deepest sympathy to all those other families who have lost a loved one and this includes my own family as we have just lost a brother, Ignatius Matasy of Seattle, Wash, on Jan. 10, 1988. May they all rest in the peace of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Branch 34 Pittsburgh, PA Branch 34 held its last meeting of 1987 on Dec. 20 at which it elected the following officers for 1988: Michael R. Kara, president; Robert A. Kapinus, vice president; Mary Ann Kara, secretary; Louis Kubus, treasurer; and Andrew Vámos and William Mayor, auditors. After the well-attended business meeting, branch members enjoyed a buffet prepared by the officers’ wives to celebrate the Christmas holidays. The February meeting will be held, as usual, on the second Sunday of the month at 2:00 p.m. in St. Ann’s Church Social Hall in Hazelwood. Branch 34 Pittsburgh, PA Branch 71 Duquesne, PA Branch 89 Homestead, PA On Sunday, Dec. 13, the Homeville Fire Hall in West Mifflin, Pa., was the scene of the family Christmas party for Branch 34 Pittsburgh, Branch 71 Duquesne and Branch 89 Homestead. The turnout was tremendous and, as is every year, we surpassed the previous year in attendance. As the children entered the hall they were greeted by Mrs. Donna Nagy, wife of National Director and Vice Chairman of the Board Roger Nagy, and her children Sara and Greg who distributed bags of goodies and refreshments. National Director Elmer W. Toth greeted all the members and introduced the guests from our Official Family that were in attendance: National President Stephen G. Danko and his son Derek; Chairman of the Board Joseph Arvay; National Treasurer Frances Furedy; National Secretary E. E. Vargo and his wife Betty and Advisory Board Member Stephen Danko. Also in attendance were former National Secretary Gus Nagy and his wife Elizabeth. Mr. Toth also introduced the officers of the branches. They were Branch 34 President and National Auditor Michael Kara, Vice President Robert Kapinus, and Treasurer Louis Kubus. We were also glad to have with us from the Home Office, Mrs. Gerry Robison with her husband Bob. Branch 71 President Roger Nagy was introduced along with his wife Donna, who is the Branch Coordinator. After the introductions, the children sang christmas carols and were entertained by the Sadecky Puppets, which they enjoyed immensely. After the program Santa visited with the children and gave each of them a gift box of candy. A buffet was set, and the refreshments were enjoyed by all. We would like to thank the following members of the branches that helped make the party a success: Zita Kara, Ann Kubus, Ann Walick, Lisa Toth, John Toth Jr., Richard Toth, Ruth Toth, Bert and Mary Ann Priam, Betty Mullen, Wilma and William Turoczy and Helen Shumaker. Branches 34, 71 and 89 would like to thank the Home Office for the generous contribution to the party, and we extend our best wishes to all for a Very Happy New Year! Branches 52 &59 Windber, PA By Mary Miller Branch 52 & 59 Coordinator Branches 52 and 59 together held their annual children’s Christmas party at the Scalp Level V.F.W. Hall on Dec. 20, 1987. The hall was decorated with all the glitter of Christmas. Santa Claus, played by Mr. David Trusch, did a good job of presenting each child with gifts of candy and the other novelties supplied by the Home Office. Pictures of Santa Claus and the children were taken by Mrs. John Orris, wife of Branch President John Orris, who made his appearance even though he was just discharged from the hospital the day before the party. The following ladies helped with preparing the refreshments of sandwiches, homemade cookies, and soda: Mrs. John Orris, Mrs. Ann Demko, Mrs. Bertha Horner and Mary Miller. The men helping were John Orris Jr., Louis Vanyo and John Orris. It’s great to have the children and parents get together for this festive occasion every year. We thank the Home Office for making this possible. May we see you all again in 1988. Branch 76 Philadelphia, PA By Steve Szemes Branch 76 Corresponding Secretary We are glad to report that we had an exceptionally good turnout for our December meeting, at which we held our family Christmas party. In the true holiday spirit, those present were treated to a variety of delicious appetizers and refreshments. The children were given gifts of games, toys and money. They, in turn, entertained us with their talented acts and caroling. This created a joyous holiday atmosphere. At the meeting which followed, officers for the coming year were elected. Branch 76 officers for 1988 are: John Mikula, president; John Gubicza, vice president; Elsie Szemes, treasurer; Clara Fenessy, recording secretary; Helen Molnár and Stephen Pokoray, auditors; and Steve Szemes, corresponding secretary. Our branch also donated holiday baskets to two needy families. On behalf of the officers and members of Branch 76, we wish to thank the Home Office for their generous contributions to the branch Christmas party and the holiday basket fund. We were saddened to hear of the recent passing of an old friend and truly dedicated fraternalist, John Balia. Our most sincere sympathy to his loving family. He will be greatly missed by all. Branch 129 Columbus, OH By Frank Peterfy Branch 129 President On Saturday Dec. 12, 1987, Branch 129 held its annual Christmas party at the VFW Hall, 425 Princeton Ave., Columbus, Ohio. We were blessed with good weather, and, as a result, we had an excellent turn out. We had 205 adults and 108 children. In addition to the usual libations, we had stuffed cabbage, Hungarian sausage, ham and various relish dishes and for dessert, cookies and Hungarian "kolach”. Continued on Page 7
