Page 8, William Penn Life, November 1988 Branch News Branch 1 Bridgeport, CT By William J. Bero National Director Frank Bero, Advisory Board member and president of Branch 1, recently resigned as chairman of the Connecticut Real Estate Commission, ending more than 20 years of participation and leadership in the commission. In his letter to Gov. William O’Neill, Mr. Bero stated he felt it was "time to give a younger person the opportunity to serve and make his or her contributions, as I have tried to do.” The commission was established by the State Legislature in 1967 to license and regulate the real estate industry throughout the state. At that time, Mr. Bero was appointed by then-Gov. John Dempsey as a member of the commission. His fellow commissioners selected him to serve as chairman. In 1980 the chairmanship became a governor-appointed position, and Mr. Bero was selected by then-Gov. Ella Grasso to continue his service as chairman. We at Branch 1 are proud of Frank Bero and the fine service he rendered to our state for the past 20 years. In other branch news, Branch 1 will sponsor a New Year’s Eve celebration for members and guests at Bessemmer Center, 2200 North Ave., Bridgeport. The evening’s festivities will include a buffet meal, champagne toast, set-ups (BYOB), party favors and entertainment. Continental breakfast will be served after midnight. The entertainment will be provided by Pizazz, a popular local night club band. Admission will be $35 per person. Ticket sales will be limited to 250 persons. For further information or reservations contact Bill Bero at 368-1851. Make reservations early as a sellout crowd is expected. We would like to extend our congratulations to Branch 1 member Alexander Nanai and his wife, the former Elizabeth Csősz, who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year with a party at the Stepping Stone Restaurant in Redding. The party, attended by many of the couple’s relatives and friends, was hosted by the Nanai’s children, Alexander, Stephen and Anna. Mr. Nanai was a manager of the Stamford branch of the former Rákóczi Aid Association for many years. He also served as a Connecticut delegate to the 1955 merger convention which joined the Rákóczi with the Verhovay Aid Association to form the William Penn Association. Our best wishes to the happy couple. Approximately 60 William Penn members from Weirton, W.Va. and the surrounding area attended the annual bacon fry sponsored by Branches 10, 40 and 349 Weirton. In the picture above, four of the guests stick their bacon slabs into the fire in order to make the traditional Hungarian treat. It was a ritual carried on at William Penn branches across the country this summer. Branch I member Alexander Nanai and his wife Elizabeth celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year. Branch 10 Branch 40 Branch 349 Weirton, WV By Louis A. Fodor Chairman, National Auditing Committee About 60 members of branches 10,40 and 349 gathered Sept. 18 for their annual bacon fry held at the Tiltonsville, Ohio, city park. Many members brought a covered dish to compliment the bacon. The affair also featured games, card playing and a singalong of many favorite Hungarian tunes. Some members could be seen dancing to the music provided by musicians Louis A. Fodor, Joe Morro, Francis Duska and Danny Laslo. Others in attendance exercised their lungs without restraint as they sang along to a favorite melody. The bacon fry has become a popluar annual affair among members at the three branches, and branch officials say they plan to keep up this tradition as long as possible. Branch 14 Cleveland, OH After a summer filled with activities, Branch 14 resumed its schedule of monthly meetings on Sept. 14. The meeting came on the heels of the branch’s dinner-dance held Sept. 10 at St. John’s Byzantine Church in Solon. Those at the dinner enjoyed a delicious Hungarian meal and danced to the music of Frank Boricz and his Orchestra. Many thanks to chairwoman Violet Sarosi for coordinating this excellent affair. The next activity on Branch 14’s busy agenda is the annual family Christmas party to be held Dec. 10 at the West Side Hungarian Reformed Church’s Calvin Center. All children who are branch members will receive invitations, but all branch members are welcome to attend. Children will receive R.S.V.P. cards with their invitations, but other members wishing to attend the party should contact chairwoman Dawn Ward at (216) 238-8500. The party will feature a professional puppet show and, of course, a visit from Santa Claus who will bring gifts for the children. A delicious buffet meal will be served after the puppet show. More than 80 children attended last year’s party, and the number of children attending this year’s party is sure to top 100. Branch 14 holds its monthly meetings on the second Wednesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. at the VFW hall, 4116 Rockside Road, Independence, Ohio. Please try to attend our meetings and become involved in the planning of the many branch activities. We were very pleased to have 100 honorees and their guests in attendance. It was also great to see members of all ages at this distinguished affair. We had many travelers this summer. Irene Gall Korpák recently returned from a trip to Morocco, Spain and Africa. Though she had a nice time, she does not recommend taking the trip in the summertime. The average daily temperature was 127 degrees. Branch President Steve and Julia Danko recently returned from a trip to Hungary. As usual, they thoroughly enjoyed themselves and noted that it was a little cooler there. Joe and Betty Soter also returned from an early fall visit to Hungary. They said it was a beautiful time to be there and that the countryside was lovely. Welcome home to all of you. You are always missed. Our branch is pleased to host Király Ernő on Nov. 3. He and his Hungarian orchestra have been entertaining audiences for years. Please call Club Manager Steve Szatmári for tickets. Darlene Szatmári and her dance group are planning their annual Christmas card party for Nov. 28. As this function is always a sellout, please contact the club for your tickets and reservations as soon as possible. Our annual family Christmas party will be held on Dec. 3 at 1:00 p.m. This annual affair is a treat for members of all ages. As you can see, Branch 18 is starting a very busy season. Members should watch their mail for the Branch 18 Newsletter to get the latest on all branch events. Well, it’s that time again to wish Julia Danko a great winter and a Merry Christmas. She is again returning to her winter home in Florida. Take good care of yourself, Julia, and we will see you in the spring. You will be missed. Hope you’re all planning to join us for our events.
