Address your letters to: Managing Editor, William Penn Life, 709 Brighton Road, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15233. 1 have served the William Penn Association for 20 years. I accepted this position after the death of my husband, Joseph Miller Jr., in 1968. Due to my health I am forced to give up these duties. Hopefully, the National Officers will soon find a replacement. It was a pleasure working with the William Penn Association and all its members. Mary Miller Johnstown, PA William Penn should continue Erdley campaign Enclosed is my check for $50 toward your Erdély Fund. I feel that you should repeat your appeal for help in all future issues of the William Penn Life. Both of my parents, Michael and Julia, left Homorod Almas in 1912 and 1913 to emigrate to Monaca, Pa., where I was born in 1915. I visited Erdély in 1977, therefore I have a good idea of the plight of the Hungarians there. I commend you on your fine efforts to help those poor, unfortunate and oppressed people. Michael Rigo Canfield, OH Remembering St. Stephen YOUNGSTOWN, OH — National Treasurer Francis A. Furedy and Chairman of the Board Joseph P. Arvay lay a wreath on behalf of the William Penn at the statue of St. Stephen of Hungary during ceremonies held Sept. 11 commemorating the 950th anniversary of St. Stephen’s death. The ceremonies were part of a pilgrimage made by many Hungarians to Our Lady of Csiksomlyo Shrine, run by the Franciscan Fathers in Youngstown. In honoring St. Stephen, Pope John Paul II said "his great personality, wisdom, care, loyalty to the chair of St. Peter and, most of all, his child-like love of the Mother of God should be an example and comfort to you. ” The Kodály Ensemble Hungarian Dance Theater continues its first-ever tour of North America. The Association is co-sponsoring the troupe’s performance in Pittsburgh on Nov. 23. Ensemble Here, the ensemble transmits the vitality and power of dance in the village community as well as the intimate relationship between musician and dancer. In the programs second part, "Changing Traditions,” the ensemble recognizes that as traditional communities change, so does their art. The troupe addresses here a topic that has long been taboo for state supported folk ensembles which have generally presented idealized images of folk dance and music. The ensemble brings to the stage the 20th century process of the breakdown of traditional peasant culture and its replacement by shallow, quasi-urban fashions, leaving the viewer to question the impact of change. "Traditions Interpreted,” the program’s third and final section, presents the suffusing of folk art and modern meaning. Without destroying the integrity of the folk base, the choreog---------------From Page 1 raphers use the folk idiom to develop interpretive themes. Political issues surface, and the most ancient songs of exile take on new meaning. It is this ability to deal with folk art on different levels that puts the Kodály Ensemble into the vanguard of folk ensembles the world over, and makes the performance one folk art lovers will not want to miss. The tour of the Kodály Ensemble was made possible by the Dorothy Balogh Fund of the American Folklore Centrum and the Soros Foundation. The Pittsburgh performance is being cosponsored by the William Penn and the Pittsburgh International Folk Theatre (PITF). Tickets for the Pittsburgh show are available at Kaufmann’s, Tix, the William Penn Home Office (412-231-2979) and the PITF (412-261-9711). Prices are $8, $10 and $12. Group rates are available.
