The Board has appointed Mr. Radvany as Secretary of the Board Emeritus. for Spring 1989 Kodály Ensemble to tour U.S. TEANECK, NJ — Members and friends of the Association can witness cultural history this fall when the Kodály Ensemble Hungarian Dance Theater makes its first tour of North America. The critically acclaimed music and dance ensemble will perform in 22 cities in the eastern and mid-western United States and Canada this October and November. Since its establishment in 1984, the Kodály Ensemble has been hailed by critics for its musical versatility, technical skill, avant-garde choreographic concepts, and originality. The members of the group are among the most talented dancers in Hungary today, and many have been decorated for their skills as folk artists. The choreographic achievements of the Ensemble have repeatedly succeeded in elevating the folk idiom to the level of universal theater and allowing traditional art forms to reach new horizons. Choreographers Zoltán Zsurafszky and Zoltán Farkas have received numerous awards for their work and have traveled, performed, and taught throughout Europe and North America. The group’s artistic philosophy mirrors that of other famous Hungarian artists. It follows the same pattern in dance that Bela Bartók and Zoltán Kodály established in music decades ago. The work starts with regular research trips during which the artists study and collect authentic material from the most talented dancers in small villages. The material gained from these sources is carefully analyzed in order to identify the essence of See ‘Ensemble’ Page 8 PITTSBURGH — William Penn members may have the chance to test their sea legs next spring on an Association-sponsored cruise of the Caribbean. The Caribbean cruise is part of the Association’s continuing effort to expand its membership services, said National Vice President Zoltán B. Emri. "We have received requests from a number of members for some type of travel-related fraternal activity in addition to our annual trip to Hungary,” Vice President Emri said. "We decided on a Caribbean cruise because it is traditionally one of the more popular vacation destinations and should attract the interest of our members,” he said. Tentative plans call for the cruise to take place in either April or May 1989. The length of the cruise will be at least seven days. Association officials have received three cruise package proposals from travel agencies. But the size of travel discounts and the number of perks offered to the Association’s travel group will depend largely on members’ interest in the cruise. "Right now, we will probably get a discount of between $200 and $300 for each member going on the cruise,” Vice President Emri said. "With a sufficient number of members booking passage, we can arrange for a Hungarian night aboard ship featuring specially prepared Hungarian foods,” he said. "If we get more people to sign on, we could possibly have strolling gypsy musicians on board,” he said. Simply put, the more members who sign up for the Caribbean cruise, the more perks and bigger discounts they will enjoy. "So what we are trying to do now is see how much interest there is amongst our members in such a cruise,” Vice President Emri said. "The sooner we know how many people are interested, the sooner we can set up the final itinerary.” Anyone interested in climbing aboard the William Penn-sponsored Caribbean cruise should contact Vice President Emri by writing him at the William Penn Association, 709 Brighton Road, See ‘Cruise’ Page 2 Association mourns loss of Zoltán Cibulas Inside ■ Members respond to plea for Erdély refuegees ....
