To date, more than $200 has been sent in by members in response to an appeal from National President Stephen G. Danko which appeared in the August issue of the William Penn Life. The pergola, like the mansion PITTSBURGH — The William Penn has begun making plans to sponsor two special trips to Hungary next summer for Association members. The first trip will be exclusively for members ages 15 to 18. This trip for teens has been tentatively scheduled for July 1989 and will include a stay at a Hungarian cultural camp and a tour of Hung-Pittsburgh, Pa. 15233, or calling him at (412) 231-2979. Those who are interested are urged to contact the Home Office itself, was designed in 1900 by Frank Alden and Alfred B. Harlow, two of the most renowned architects in American history. Today, the mansion is listed in the National Historic Register. But the pergola, one of the most significant features of the estate, is in dire need of repair. Many of its tall, white columns are cracked and rotted and remain standing only with additional wooden supports. ary’s most famous and historic sites. As with this year’s children’s trip, the Association will pay for at least half of each teenager’s air fare, accommodations, tour expenses and camp fees. The cost to each teenager will be no more than $500, organizers said. The second trip will be the as soon as possible. The Association is also planning to sponsor another trip to Hungary in 1989, marking the 14th straight year that the Association will offer such a trip to its members. dent Danko noted that "current capital expenditures by the Association for the Home [will] be for the well-being of our personal care residents” and that "historical preservation must rely on grants.” However, he also noted that acquiring the necessary grants takes several months, and "the pergola will not survive one more winter.” Therefore, the Association established a special "Save the Per-Association’s annual tour to Hungary for all members interested in visiting the so-called "Land of the Magyars.” This will mark the 14th straight year that the William Penn Association has offered such a trip to its members. The tour will include air transportation to and from Hungary and a specially-designed land tour package that will take travelers to some of Hungary’s most beautiful and popular attractions. Further details on both Hungary Tour ’89 and the special trip for teenagers will appear in future issues of the William Penn Life as soon as those details become available. Donations mount for refugees PITTSBURGH — William Penn members from across the nation, moved by the plight of Hungarians fleeing Romania, have begun sending in their donations to the Association’s relief fund to aid those refugees. In the two months since the Home Office announced the establishment of the special fund, more than $1,200 in donations has been sent by members and friends of the Association. "We are pleased with this initial response to our appeal,” said National President Stephen G. Danko. "However, the refugees from Erdély need a great deal of financial aid, and we urge all our members to please help them by contributing to this fund.” To date, more than 50,000 Hungarians living in Romania have fled across the border into Hungary. The refugees are escaping the devastating effects of Romania’s rural reorganization policy which has led to the destruction of entire villages. The Hungarian government has established a special relief fund, but officials say the government cannot bear the burden alone. The Association will match dollar-for-dollar the total amount contributed by its members, President Danko said. Anyone wishing to help the refugees can send their donations to: William Penn Association Erdély Fund, 709 Brighton Road, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15233.
