Branch donates Christmas trees By Marie Boyle Donahue Branch 8149 Reporter PITTSBURGH — Branch 8149 members enhanced the Christmas spirit at the Knights of St. George Home when they delivered live and decorated Christmas trees to the Home. The project was organized by Hazel Fletcher and Regina Bittner. They delivered the trees along with gifts from the branch for the residents and nuns at the Home. This was the third year the branch has delivered gifts to the Home. Rather than exchange gifts amongst its own members, the branch raises money to buy gifts for those at the Home. After presenting the gifts, the branch held a party for the residents and led a sing-a-long. During the Holiday season, the branch also donated $60 to buy « two baskets of groceries for the needy in the Swissvale, Pa., area. In other branch news, members gathered Dec. 8 for the annual Christmas party. Most members were in attendance and all had a good time. Officers recently elected for the year 1987 were Paul McCaffrey, president; Carl Antesberger, vice president; Helen McCaffrey, secretary; Betty Slattery, treasurer; and Kathryn Serene, marshall. The branch will not meet in January. Couple marks 55 th anniversary FLINT, MI — The members of Branch 214 gathered Dec. 14 at the Hungarian Reformed Church Hall for their annual family Christmas party. Branch Coordinator Louis Roka won the Herend plate raffle. John and Margaret Urban, members of Branch 214, celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on Jan. 9. Best wishes for more happy years together. Four branches gather for party PITTSBURGH — The Homeville Fire Hall was the scene of the Christmas party for the members of Branch 34, Pittsburgh; Branch 71, Duquesne; Branch 89, Homestead; and Branch 352, Coraopolis. Each year the attendance surpasses the previous year. This time about 350 children and adults attended. As the children entered the hall they were greeted by Branch 71 President Mrs. Donna Nagy and her children, Sara and Greg. The Nagys distributed refreshments and bags with coloring books, pens, sponges and Christmas carol books to each child. A buffet luncheon was set for all to enjoy along with beverages for adults and children. Elmer Toth, national director and Branch 89 coordinator, welcomed all the members and guests and introduced the National Officers in attendance: Executive Vice President John F. Kenawell and National Secretary E. E. Vargo. Recently-appointed Fraternal Director Elizabeth Szabó was also in attendance and handed out Hungarian Christmas carol books. Following the introductions, the audience sang Christmas carols led by Mr. Toth and several children. Entertainment was provided by the Sadecky Puppets, who presented the show "Blitzen Is Missing.” It was enjoyed by all. Of course, the best was saved for last. Santa arrived and mingled with the children and adults before distributing gifts of candy and a two-dollar bill to all the children. Everyone enjoyed sitting on Santa’s lap, including the grown-ups. Our early calls by Santa to the children was a big hit. To think Santa called them personally! Door prizes were given out to the children and adults with the main adult prize being a 100th Anniversary Herend plate. We must say our combined Christmas party was a huge success, and we would like to thank the following members of the various committees for their time and effort in making this possible. We thank Michael Kara, national auditor and Branch 34 president, and his wife Zita; Louis Kubus, Branch 34 treasurer, and his wife Ann; John Tusai, Branch 34 coordinator, and his wife Kathy; Roger Nagy, national director and Branch 71 coordinator, and his wife Donna and children Sara and Greg. We also thank John S. Toth Sr., Branch 89 president, and his wife Elaine and son John; Richard and Nancy Toth; Elmer Toth and his wife Ruth and daughter Lisa; Mrs. Elizabeth Walick, Branch 89 secretary; and Elmer Furedy, Branch 352 president. The above branches would like to thank the National Officers and Board of Directors for their generous support to make this Christmas party possible. We would also like to extend our best wishes for a very happy New Year to all the National Officers, Board of Directors, National Auditors and employees. Mr. Duruttya has been a member for over 40 years and served on the Board of Directors and as branch manager for 10 years. He always served as a dedicated officer, willing to lend a hand whenever assistance was needed. When the plumbing went bad, or the electrical devices did not work or the bar was shorthanded, he was there to help. He was well-known as a "chef” in our kitchen at the William Penn Club. He was our main cook for eight months. Mr. Duruttya first became famous for starting the fish fry dinners in 1966. He is fondly known as "Uncle Mike” to all who love him at Branch 189. After the election of officers, Mr. Bárány, his voice choked with emotion, thanked Mr. Duruttya for his faithful service and dedication. We will all miss him. Penny Duruttya led all present in an ovation for Mr. Duruttya. Our family Christmas party was held Dec. 21 at the William Penn Club. It was indeed a joy to attend the party. The children clapped with joy when they saw Santa. Every child who has a birthday near or on Christmas Day sat on Santa’s lap and all the children sang "Happy Birthday” to them. After singing some Christmas carols, Santa gave each child a Christmas stocking, but not before he heard what they wanted him to bring them for Christmas. When Santa was ready to leave the children waved good-by to him saying "Merry Christmas to you Santa, please come back next year.” Our sincere thanks to the Home Office for their yearly donation to our party. We here at Branch 189 wish everyone a very Happy New Year. Branch shares Christmas with elderly By Mary Lou Sporner Branch 8126 President ST.
