Last, but not least, Branch 27 would like to congratulate Stephen Ivancso Sr. on his re-election to the Board of Directors and for being named a vice chairman of the Board. We’re very proud of you. Members — please call me to tell me of your latest news. I would love to write all about you. My number is 691-9641. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Helen R. Kaluczky Branch 28 Reporter We have our Branch 28 Christmas party all planned. It will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at the American-Hungarian Club’s Donald Avenue grounds. We hope to see everyone there. At our branch meeting on Nov. 15 at Branch President Steve Sandor’s home, we had a nice turn-out and got quite a few agenda items accomplished. Among the items agreed upon was our decision to donate Christmas baskets this year. As sickness and unemployment have taken their toll among us, we must do all that we can to help those in need. Our sincere congratulations go out to Reverends Farkas and Bonn on the 20th anniversary of their Hungarian Ecumenical broadcast on WBBW-AM 1240. The anniversary dinner was held on Nov. 8 at the Calvin Center Hall. Quite a few of our William Penn members attended. Our sympathy is extended to the families of Steve J. Walsh, Rita Mae Toke, George Kish and Stephen Chordas. May they rest in peace. I was in San Francisco recently, taking care of my daughter, Joan, who had undergone surgery. (She came along quite nicely, thank you.) During my last week there, Joan was able to take me to a few places. We decided to take in the Hungarian Community Center on Geary Street for lunch that Sunday. However, when we got there, the door was locked and there was a big sign reading "Ebed Minden Második Vasarnap” (Lunch Every Second Sunday). We were there on the wrong Sunday. It would have been interesting to know if there were any W illiam Penn members amongst those who ate there. As it is, my daughter is the only member I know of who lives in San Francisco. We also toured the Mission Dolores where Pope John Paul blessed the victims of AIDS. It was quiet — no crowds, no hoopde-do — so you could look at all the historical places and meditate about its past, which dates back to 1776. That’s when Father Junipero Serra established the chain of missions all along the California coast. We thought about our own heritage and how many years have gone by, not only years, but centuries since Hungary first emerged as a nation, and that our own William Penn Association recently celebrated its 100th anniversary of existence. Our Association has some wonderful bargains in insurance during this Centennial celebration, and we do hope you take advantage of them. It is not too late. Please contact Branch 28 Coordinator Gabe Nameth at (216) 792-8145. Branch 28 wishes you all the Blessings of the coming holidays. Branch 51 Passaic, NJ A statue honoring the Hungarian freedom fighters of the 1956 Revolt was dedicated Oct. 25 in Passaic’s Third Ward Memorial Park. Among the 3,000 people attending the ceremonies were many members of Branch 51 Passaic. The branch was one of many American Hungarian organizations and individuals who contributed a total of $65,000 to pay for the statue. The bronze statue of two teenagers carrying a Hungarian flag without the hammer and sickle is a memorial to the 36,000 who fought in the October revolution and the Soviet invasion that followed. The statue is the centerpiece of the memorial, which includes a stone fence, American and Hungarian flags, and bronze plaques dedicated to important people in Hungarian history. The statue was created by Ohio artist Csaba Kur. (Parts of this story were taken from the North Jersey Herald &. News — Ed.) Branch 76 Philadelphia, PA By Steve Szemes Branch 76 Coordinator With the passing of a very turbulent year, we are looking forward to the new one with anticipation, that it will be peaceful and, hopefully, a better one. Our branch will hold the meeting and election of officers for the coming year at 8:00 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5 at the Philadelphia Hungarian Club, located at 1125 Southampton Road. We are hoping for a good turnout with members interested in taking an active role in helping revive the activities that will benefit our organization. With the coming holidays, we will try to recreate the true oldtime Christmas spirit with greetings from Santa, brunch, goodies, refreshments and caroling. At this time we wish to extend our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the family of Mrs. Helen Molnár, who passed away recently at age 89. May she rest in peace. I would appreciate it if our members kept me informed on what’s happening in their and their families’ lives. We care. For matters relating to your insurance needs, please call Steve Szemes at 543-8876. We wish to extend our best wishes to everyone, with all the blessings for the holidays and the New Year. Branch 249 Dayton, OH By Albert G. Kertesz Branch 249 Coordinator Our branch bowling league has gotten off to a flying start with more teams participating and looking forward to the National Bowling Tournament in South Bend,Ind. Expressions of sympathy are hereby extended to those of our members who recently experienced the loss of a loved one. We also wish a speedy recovery to our current and recently hospitalized members. Branch President John Motko was thoroughly surprised at the party given in his honor on the occasion of his 90th birthday. It was the best kept secret in town since many of his friends and branch members were in attendance. We wish Mr. Motko many more birthday celebrations in continued good health. For both John and Mary Motko, it was a dual celebration, since this happened to be their 10th wedding anniversary as well. May they have many more. Parents and grandparents are encouraged to consider purchasing the popular 2-for-l Juvenile Plan for their children and grandchildren. This year the following children have joined our ranks: Benjamin, Erin and Rachel Vida; Christine, Elizabeth, Heather, Jason and Tara Zapatony; Kenneth Hansen; Annette Polski; Susan Kertesz; and Catherine Schmidt.
