A special fund-raising activity took place at St. Elizabeth’s Church where the museum proudly opened its second exhibit to the public. On display at the second exhibit was a replica of St. Stephen’s Crown blessed by Cardinal Mindszenty, a cope of King Matthias which was on loan from the Oberlin College Museum, paintings by George Kozmán and a 15- foot hand-carved Székely kapu which was created by the Hungarian Scouts of Cleveland. Another smaller item was a reproduction of an original sculpture created by George Holossy. The original, which is four-anda-half meters high, stand in Liberty Square in Boston. This statue has an interesting history. A small group of Boston Hungarians had a dream. They banded together and through combined efforts were able to realize their dream. Many members contributed a day’s pay, the city fathers supported them, people from various states and even Budapest contributed to the effort. The Massachusetts Magyar Egyesulet’s dream of having a statue in their city commemorating the 1956 Freedom Fight in Hungary became a reality. The intent of the exhibition’s sponsor, the Cleveland Hungarian Heritage Society, is to collect and preserve things having to do with Hungarians and their com-George Holossy's sculpture commemorating the 1956 Revolution in Hungary. munity. They are looking for more equipment such as cases for displays, racks, filing cabinets and other items that would be helpful in establishing their museum archives. The Society is especially interested in newspaper clippings of Hungarian events in the Cleveland area, old photographs of Hungarian groups and church albums. Perhaps some of our William Penn members have items that would be of interest to the museum.
