OFFICIAL PUBLICATION WILLIAM PENN ASSOCIATION Volume 20 September — October 1985 Number 5 Second National William Penn Golf Tournament Filled With Fun, Food, Fraternalism. Lineup on auction raffle of gold bag and clubs. By Barbara B. Botkin National Director Perfect weather, wonderful people, an outstanding golf course, great prizes, and lots of excellent food made this year’s William Penn National Golf Tournament a resounding success! The tournament, held July 13 in Canton, Ohio, was organized by Co-Administrators Barbara and Les Botkin. Mrs. Botkin is a National Director for the William Penn Association. Mr. Botkin is a PGA golf professional and head pro at Youghiogheny Country Club in McKeesport, PA. Hosts for this second annual event were the Alliance Branch 189. The tournament day began with a golf clinic presented by Mr. Botkin who gave a golf shot exhibition entitled “Fallacies of Golf.” Following the clinic, the first golfers began play at 10 a.m. continuing on through 1:15. The playing field this year included 112 golfers, up from 76 golfers in 1984. One hundred seventy-five persons attended the Saturday evening banquet at the Sheraton Beiden Inn which included directors, auditors, and many national officers and golfers from several states. Pre-tournament festivities included a hospitality room on Friday organized by local tournament coordinators Karl and Dorothy Trumpeter. Mrs. Trumpeter prepared most of the delectable goodies that were served which included mini sandwiches, cheese balls, fresh vegetables and dip, and a variety of luscious pastries. Other hospitality room committee Lester Botkin, a golf professional at Youghiogheny Country Club in McKeesport, Pa., reads the list of winners at this year’s event in Canton. Prior to the course action, Mr. Botkin conducted a clinic for the various participants. And the winner of the auction raffle was Bill Papp, of Michigan. That smile on his face was one of great appreciation. members were John and Ann Barany, Scott and Patty Dickes and Dan and Polly Moss. The Alliance Branch also hosted an informal dinner on Friday evening at their William Penn Club attended by 81 persons. Chicken paprikash and stuffed cabbage were served with a variety of other selections as well. Kathy Cibulas baked some of the delicious pastries served at the club. She and husband Zoli Cibulas comprised the Activities Committee for the tourney. Marie and Mike Duruttya helped serve the dinners and were dressed fittingly in bright Hungarian garb. Mr. and Mrs. Duruttya along with Wilbur and Jerry Taylor and Richard and Cheryl Fetters made up the golf and banquet committee. They were instrumental in helping our event run smoothly at the golf course and also in preparing the tables for the Saturday evening banquet. • Golfers and family members enjoyed the beautiful weather over the weekend and relaxed by the two swimming pools at the Sheraton. A Hungarian trio provided the musical entertainment for Saturday night and shown during the cocktail hour were videotapes of the golfers teeing off. Following was a delicious smorgasbord dinner. In addition to the golf and door prizes presented at the awards banquet, golf favors were given to each player and dinner attendant so hopefully everyone had the feeling they had “won something” even if they didn’t win a major prize. Golf towels with the William Penn logo were passed out to each player before tee-off and each dinner participant received a magnetic golf address book and William Penn pen. Eighty-three golf and door prizes plus twenty centerpieces created by Director Botkin were also given away. AND the biggest prize of the evening, a set of woods, irons and golf bag with headcovers, was won in an auction raffle by Bill Papp of Michigan.
