First Woman Elected to the National Board of Directors BARBARA BOTKIN Barbara Botkin of McKeesport, Pa., made William Penn history in becoming the first woman ever to be elected to the National Board of Directors. The 32 year old Director has been a lifetime member of the Association and an active fraternalist in the McKeesport area for several years where she has been Chairman of Fraternal Affairs, planning branch activities such as Christmas Parties, special events and golf tournaments. She has been a Branch Manager for 5 years and Secretary of Branch 226 for one year. While the William Penn is financially healthy, Mrs. Botkin observes that many fraternals have gone by the wayside because of financial difficulties. One of her goals, she adds, is to help ensure that this doesn’t happen to the William Penn. "One of the ways we can do this is to increase our membership sales by remaining competetive while improving the personal service we give," says Mrs. Botkin. Mrs. Botkin looks forward to working with the 11 members of the Board, five of them, like her, firsttime Directors. She sees the Board make-up as a blend of "older experienced people and energetic youth." While she admits she's very excited about her four-year term on the Board, she credits others for helping her cause. "I think there rarely is a time when a person achieves something totally on his or her own," she observes. Mrs. Botkin hopes to play a role in the development of the 500 acre plus property in Wellsburg, West Virginia recently acquired through the merger with the Catholic Knights of St. George.
