We will miss him. Our best wishes to our National President, Mr. Elmer Charles, who recently celebrated his birthday. On July 23rd, the family and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Schmidt of Middletown, Del., will gather to celebrate Mr. Schmidt’s 90th birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt are both 50 year members. He was also President of Branch 76 at one time. Our best wishes for a happy, healthy, birthday to a good friend and a memorable day for his wife, Margaret, family, and friends. Steve Szemes Branch 189 Alliance, Ohio The William Penn Athletic Club dinner was quite an enjoyable affair. President of the Athletic Club, Jerry Hamby, greeted the members and guests. A moment of silent prayer was observed in memory of deceased members. Master of Ceremonies Larry Haidet introduced guests present from Alliance, Ohio who were Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Summers and Mrs. Mable Leach. Also present were National Director Mr. Steve Lesco and Mrs. Lesco, Mr. and Mrs. Gary Maddel, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stypa, President of Branch 14 of Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. Betty Panin and Mr. Steve Emery of Sharon, Pennsylvania. The delicious dinner served by Manager Penny Duruttya and her staff was well consumed by the 100 members and guests present. Dinner Dance. music of Jim Szittai’s band of Canton- Akron, Ohio was enjoyed by both young and “us” not so young! The “us” not so young really enjoyed those Hungarian csardases! The two special floral arrangements were won by Gerri Taylor and Rose Douhette. Mrs. Taylor presented her arrangement to Mr. Ralph Taylor, city health inspector of Alliance, Ohio, who was ill in the City Hospital. Thank you Gerri! Congratulations to the Popovich Volleyball team! They are first place City Tournament Champs and 2nd place champs of the City League! These girls are all members of the William Penn Club. The long practice and untiring management of their coach Kenneth Young was indeed a rewarded effort. Branch 18 is to be congratulated for the fine entertainment presented at the banquet. We of Br. 189 greatly enjoyed our meal at the William Penn Club in Lincoln Park, Michigan, and we also enjoyed the music of Jakob Emil’s Hungarian gypsy orchestra. Those beautiful old Hungarian songs the gypsies played brought back such wonderful memories of the “good old days.” June 8, 1983 was four years Managers Pug and Penny Duruttya have been managing the Branch 189 William Penn Club. Thier friendly and happy faces are familiar to the 1,000 members, both social and insurance members. Their management and endeavors to keep improving fraternalism has been a great success. Keep up the good work! Our annual William Penn A.C. picnic will be held August 28 at Beechwood Park. Lunch will be at 12:00. Come one, come all, enjoy eating, visiting, playing games or just stroll around talking to old friends. Our sympathy goes out to Marvin Jerrette at the death of his father. May he rest in peace. Fraternally, Marie Duruttya Branch 249 Dayton, Ohio Since the last issue of this publication, our local William Penn Bowling League concluded its season. A dinner was held in honor of the bowlers at which time trophies were presented to the winners. We take this opportunity to congratulate the winners, and sincerely thank all those who contributed to the success of the festive occasion. Our branch was well represented at the National Bowling Tournament in Detroit. Several of our bowlers appeared among the winners. Congratulations to them also. All those interested in bowling next season in the local league are invited to call Steve Horvath at 434-3249. I am happy to announce that my wife Anne, has become my permanent co-host on our weekly “Music of Hungary” radio program, now in its 32nd year and heard Sunday mornings from 9:00 A.M. till 12:00 noon, on WQRP-FM, 88.1 on the dial.
